536 would be a MINIMUM. Total wolf population is probably 30% more than that.

Some of would put that count closer to 1.2 Billion (roughly the same amount of turkeys in the Bitterroot valley).

Yes, if you read what I wrote, I said "counted" in the number, so yes that would be
a min. Our wolves are confined to winter ranges in the winter making density numbers immaterial . I assure you there's not a lot of areas I travel hunting coyotes or lions where I don't run into wolves . Today 3 different packs in 36 miles on a snowmobile.
 
Here is a link for those people that do not realize the amount of work required to create a hunting season for wolves in Michigan. Try to imagine the man hours to gather this information and then later having to compile it all in a report. There is a lot of factual information for the people that are interested in the Great Lakes Region wolves biology and management considerations.
