Decided to break out one of my brand new samples and put it to the test this afternoon. Work found me in Great Falls today, and I was kind of hoping to find some time to head out to Freezeout for the last couple hours of light to try and fill my swan tag. The roads were crap today, so when I got a hot tip on where I might be able to find some birds closer to town, I decided to check it out.

First I had to bust a brand new Beretta A400 Xtreme out of the box and break it in Montana style with side ways snow and a GIANT white bird.

The guy I talked to said there were a couple hundred birds sitting on a small pond on state land last night, but today there were only 3. It was about a 1/2 mile walk in to the pond and another 200 yards of belly crawling to get close enough without spooking them. Cover ran out at about 75 yards so I hopped up and ran another 20 yards closer and let em have it with 3 shots of 3.5" Hevi-Shot. First three shots out of the new gun and I probably bagged more meat in one bird than all of last year.

It was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to seeing what one of these things taste like. I am thinking jerky, but if anyone has a recipe I am all ears.

Fun birds to hunt! I found them surprisingly small under the feathers. We made all ours into jerky.

Congrats! You even shot the right species. See the little yellow patch on the beak. Tundra swan
Did the hevi shot buck a little?

Very nice, congrats! Watching them fall out the the sky with wings, legs, and neck akimbo is pretty cool.

I have been looking at that same shotgun for a while now. Just a little too much dough. Maybe you could borrow me yours for 4 or 5 years and I will see if I like it:D

Nice! Congrats. I like to throw the breasts in a crock pot with some veggies and a bunch of seasonings. Real fancy recipe. but it has always turned out good.

I smoked my swan's breast meat and served it at a social ganthering, some nonhunters, and everyone thought it was elk! My swan tasted great. Hope yours does too. Let us know.
