Some have blemishes, but most of the ones I get they will take a new rod, cut 3 inches off, scratch the label, and cut the price dramatically! I now own about 14 St Croixs. It's an addiction.

Ugly Stick Elite series might be worth a look. I outfit my boat with 2 sets of Ugly Sticks, a set for panfish and a set for cats. Haven't had one broken yet in 15 years of chartering and Lord knows some have tried. The Loomis and Lamiglas rods are nice but overrated and over priced. Some good inexpensive rods are Okuma Celilo series, Diawa Spinmatic and Eagle Claw PowerLight. All good jig rods but the heaviest jigs we use are 1/32 & 1/16. If you can find a good blank in the action and length you like consider having a custom rod built. You deserve one!

...or shut one in a car door. It's not an easy way to learn that lesson when you're a college kid and you break your first Sage fly rod.
