Texas Baited Mule Deer Hunt

Between the grain feeder and the unbelievably bad music I could feel my brain cells dying.

Yeah, it ain't how most of us would do it, but it was kind of cool seeing the arrow exit. I've never seen that before.

I watched it. Its a high protein feed, free choice, night and/or day, so its way better for the deer than a motorized feeder. Management buck probably because that one G2 does not split, so they got him out of the gene pool early before he breads much, if at all.

Wait, are you saying this isn't much different than hunting a water hole for Antelope?

Take the food out of that trough and put water in it and you would expect to see a ground blind just like that in a lot of places out west. Maybe the water needs to be in a circular tank instead of a trough to make it fair chase though.

Maybe it's different because it's a mule deer instead of an antelope?

So a baited trough is the same as a waterhole? Please, if they habituated to feed they will arrive every time the food is available. Hardly the same thing.

Especially in a drought when there's limited feed.

Some folks like to floss spawners on redds, others want to hunt baited deer. When can we just chain 'em up so I don't have to get out of the truck?

As Tom said, that is a protein feed supplement. More than likely it is made available 24/7/365. I doubt they sit at the trough and eat 24/7/365. More than likely they eat out of it mostly at night, but sometimes they probably show up early evening or morning. I bet they have more other feed choices available than there are water sources available in some of the more desert type areas out west. I think antelope are more likely to come to water in the middle of the day than mule deer are to come to that feed trough in the middle of the day.

But in a drought there are plenty of choices for antelope to water?

For the record I've never shot an antelope (or any other game animal for that matter) at a water source.

For the record I do feed a protein pellet supplemental feed on my property here in Texas to whitetail deer 24/7/365. I have a hunting blind 185 yards from that feeder and have hunted out of that blind for several years and never shot a deer at that food source. I have seen a few deer at that food source over the years when I was sitting in the blind, but never a big buck and actually very rarely do they eat out of it during the daylight. If there are any deer during the daylight they are usually young bucks or does. I do get pictures of nice bucks using that food source on my trail camera, but shockingly they tend to use it only at night!

Oh well. I don't think anyone will be convinced one way or the other on this. I was very strongly opposed to baiting when I grew up in Montana and first moved to Texas I just couldn't believe they actually called that hunting. I don't feel that way anymore.

You mean that moving to a different part of the country and experiencing different things dulled your provincialism?? Who'd a thunk it... ;) :D
