My girlfriend and I have decided it's time to start a new chapter in our lives. Colorado has pretty much played out for me and neither of us want to move back to upstate NY. We have decided Tennessee seems kind of cool. She has a lung disease and the only specialist is in Nashville, as well as it having a large VA hospital for me. We're looking to be within 2 hours of Nashville. I'm hoping someone can give some info about the housing market (we're looking to buy as big of a piece of land as possible and build on it), hunting and fishing opportunities, and decent small towns to focus on within 2 hours of Nashville.

Thanks

Not much help on that end of Tennessee. But man you are moving to a state with some darn good fishing. Killer striped bass fishing in that state lots of lakes. Turkey hunting is great also lots of deer. Good luck on your move buddy. Beautiful state in a different way than Colorado. Fort Campbell has some big deer taken every year and is great bow hunting.

Spent some time near Johnson City when stepson was doing an internship at a college there. They had a pretty big VA hospital, don’t know if you looked at that area at all. Mountains were nice, nearby National Forest. Deer hunting opportunities were surely there. Can’t believe there wouldn’t be good trout fishing and turkey hunting nearby. Wherever you end up there, have some BBQ for me, that stuff is fantastic! Good luck with your move ! I’m sure the folks on here from Tennessee wii help you out.

John, were it me I'd be looking somewhere around Cookeville (75 miles to N'ville) Crossville (103 miles to N'ville), McMinnville (72 mies), Manchester, Murfreesboro, anywhere in the Cumberland Plateau region. Numerous lakes East of Nashville; Percy Priest, Watts Bar, Hiwassee, Chickamauga, Tellico Lake, Dale Hollow to the NE.

Gators would be acceptable footwear and I might even get by for a visit on occasion. We're about 3.5 hours East of Knoxville.

If you need good roadmaps let me know; I think I have a couple of recent ones in my stash. RT

I lived in a tiny town called Hartford, TN. Its 3hrs 45 minutes to Nashville from there. But if I was to ever move back to Tennessee it would definitely be in that area. It's in the smokey mountain national park. I would focus on there or the nantahala national park area. Beautiful country and outdoor activities abound. Good luck and God bless your move.

The western part of the state near Johnson City and Gatlinburg is nice. Chattanooga is a nice area but I'm not sure of the distance to Nashville. Tons of great trout fishing as well as small mouth bass. Wild brookies are hard to beat but small mouth bass and and a cooler of beer floating down a river may do it. Should be able to find decent turkey hunting but deer may be harder to find on public. Don't forget about wild hogs too.

It's a sellers market right now. The best VA hospital in the state is in Murfreesboro and that is 30 miles or so south of Nashville. The central part of the state is beautiful and has a lot of public land opportunities. I personally would look in the Murfreesboro/ Smyrna area first. I'm in the eastern part of the state half way between Knoxville and Chattanooga. The farther towards Memphis you go the flatter it is, the farther east the opposite, middle Tennessee is a nice mix of the two. Nashville is really a great town but is getting a little crowded. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Whoa! Best to you and yours for this chapter buddy! Gives me a reason to visit TN now... 🙂

I don't know anything about TN other then I was very disappointed in the Memphis BBQ while I was there. Anyways, I have a buddy that sells property in KY, and I see farms he list and they are a fraction of the price of farms here in northern IN. Might be worth checking KY out as Nashville isn't that far. Best of luck to you and your move.

I would go East, John. East Tennessee is beautiful. The Smoky Mountains are really special. They are probably more like 3 hours east though.

Good luck with your move. It also wouldn't hurt posting on the south east chapter BHA page on facebook. A lot guys on the page are in that area.

Good luck w/ the transition wherever you decide to go!

FWIW, I've got a good buddy that moved to the Lexington area about 15 years ago. He said other the Great Lakes fishing, and the random grouse, there's not much in Michigan that would lead him back home. He's drawn a few KY cow elk tags over the years, has great fishing, and better deer/turkey hunting where he's at. Some of the hills might play hell on your knees, but it might be worth evaluating as an option.

Cushman, I have always enjoyed your posts. Sorry, I have never met you.
Good luck with your future and making decisions based on staying healthy are always the best choice.
Hope you remain as active on the forum as in the past. You would be missed!
Colorado's loss will be Tennessee's gain.
