Tariffs and Potential Inflation

The President has claimed it is because of illegal drug flows and separately claims a negative trade balance being the reason. He painted himself into a corner with his campaign promise so had to do it. He will get calls from US businesses today. They have been stocking inventory and can probably last a few months without problem. Only thing that would really see soon is fresh produce.

I don’t expect these to last long. There will be talks and some minor concessions and Trump will declare victory. The number of fentanyl deaths has been on the decline for well over a year so he will definitely take credit for that. And the crowd will cheer.

So you are claiming victory on the recent decline?

.Open the damn trucks and containers and the smuggling will stop. Slow it down at least.
Hire people to do so.
That is huge! I would be 100% for it though that goes far beyond potential staffing options, IMO/E.

Slowing it down currently is with mass OT assigned at seaport, land borders, U.S. foreign post Preclearance ports and, U.S. foreign Cargo Security operations by U.S. CBP personal. And that is the current "Slow down".
Then, you have companies complaining about not receiving goods due to held up customs...

Sounds great though even at doubling the staffing to potentially slow it down, the current effort is more aligned with targeting.

It's a bit of reacting in a proactive method. Oxymoron in it's wording though to target you have to have activity. Targeting has become a valued tool though we're not scratching the surface.

No. Not claiming anything like that. Just saying overdose deaths are down over 20% as of latest numbers I saw. And Trump loves to take credit for good stuff.

the reality is any presidential admin has little if any idea on how much illegal drugs are coming into the country. Only way to measure is second derivative data- overdoses and deaths.

Is the "flow of illegal drugs and human trafficking from Canada" in the room with us?

Both contries are responsible for border protection. This includes the flow of illegal guns and migrants coming in from the US into Canada.

The relationship between both our countries is getting further eroded for aboslutely no reason. Instead of working together, tariffs are being imposed and will hurt YOU and ME. Border security won't change, but you and I's bills will be higher.

This President is the same one who drafted and signed the latest trade partnership with Canada. Surely, the adults in the room could've sat down and discussed these issues before making idiotic threats of annexation and ridiculous tariffs.
CBSA is completely underfunded, understaffed for the massive immigration "relief" and workers desired. RCMP has little ability to counter the illicit trade created by the earlier Canadian open borders they are now reducing.
The Criminal organizations have taken complete advantage of the prior loose immigration status. Top that with B.C. / Vancouver decriminalising all drug use (one example).
Another: Montreal/Quebec and the extensive Mafia human trafficking... and the prior less supported northern border (vs Southern) enforcement and staffing - borders to the U.S., it's turned RCMP into scraping for resources to counter the building criminal elements.
We, northern border U.S. and Canadian RCMP/CBSA, are FAR behind the enforcement level with respect to the vulnerabilities exploited by Spanish, African, mainly Eastern European, South/Central American cartel, drug and human trafficking organizations.

Yay! Go homogeneous white man. The only person that has ever made history in North America.
This is not true. The first African Americans came to the Virginia colony in 1619 which predates most white immigration by about 200 years. That original family still exists in the Hampton Roads VA area and they were also the first freed black persons in colonial america. They cut their teeth on this continent during a time when you had to make the shovel (the rest of you bought your shovels), to build the road and they have more rights to be American than most.

I wouldn't want to overstate some of the efforts of African Americans had in our historical record as some seem to, but they have made significant contributions to the building of our nation.

Some folks try to over exaggerate heroic contributions of some African American efforts - that they were allowed to do in geopolitical conflicts and politics of the nation and I think that focus truly does a disservice to the average everyday person that had to grind it out with limited resources' and authority. Building roads, farms, towns, city's and commerce may not have been how many see effort or heroism but but we built this nation together.

My family and theirs built the colony's, the roads, the city's, trade and defended it alongside each other so that most of you could arrive unmolested, having a place to eat and sleep, make your fortunes and pretend that you did it all by yourselves.

BTW, before anyone jumps to conclusions; My family has been here for 418 years (that's about 20 generations), raised in the Southern tradition, my Wife's family came over a decade and a half later on the Mayflower; I'm a lifelong Republican (currently disillusioned), Marine, White Male, He, Him.

Both sides of the border are at fault. Not just Canada. The facts are out there, our mutual border is open due to our long lasting relationship and criminals have taken advantage of it. But let's not pretend that this is a one sided issue.

CBP and other US agencies share a part of the blame for the flow of drugs, guns and illegal immigrants into Canada, some of whom have entered through the US/Mexico border and travelled all the way to the Canadian border.

I'm not arguing that there isn't a problem, there is and I see it in the streets of my small town and nearby cities; drugs, guns and all the crime that comes with it.

Just immagine if the roles were reversed and PM Justin Trudeau were going around talking crap about annexing the US or taking it by force. Now immagine if Trudeau's political lackies and fan base were all in on it and joking about a 13th Province and so on. Then, a week after taking office, JT slams 25% tariffs on Canadian goods because of border related issues...

I don't get it, Canada/US relationships went from good to bad in the matter of one Presidential inauguration. One thing I strongly believe in, is that some of those millionaire/billionaire bullies have never been punched in the face, and it shows.

That is fascinating history. I bet you and your wife’s ancestors have some pretty incredible stories. Do you have any journals or writings of theirs?

My statement was sarcasm directed towards the current administration blocking federal agencies from celebrating MLK day.

Like giving Elon Musk and the Department Of Grifting Everyone the keys to the treasury dept and databases with personal data of American citizens? Firing people in the way who are supposed to be “checks and balances”?
Interesting, an unelected, unconfirmed non-government official, former illegal alien immigrant from South Africa who has access to everyone's Social Security numbers. This must be what everyone wanted right?

Yes, it's both good and bad and we have to learn to accept it all. Equal parts pride and shame.

The story most would be interested of on here would be my wife's family who traveled out West (those times out West was Ohio) and lost his whole family (14) to tuberculosis. The patriarch survived and packed up and headed further West on a wagon train and found himself in fights with the Native Americans along the way. He ended up in Oklahoma with a new family along the way. While he was away from the family buying cattle at an auction with his youngest, the Natives raided his home and killed everyone including his new wife and a 2 year old baby. The whole thing was documented in the local paper (which was more of a quarterly newsletter). Needless to say the paper further documented the reaction of the settlers to the Native Americans which expressed an unsureness that they got the right ones but they made their point. They sold off everything that they owned and packed up again to head for California. They ran into more Native American trouble along the way and ran out of money and eventually settled in TX. That young man that went to the auction with his dad by complete chance survived the whole ordeal built a ranch and became one of my wife's ancestors; founder of a church; town founder and his grandson was a Texas Ranger. That ranger was my wife's grandfather's grandfather.

It was a go West story of America if you ever heard of one. I eventually meet and Married my Wife in HI which is odd since both of our families were in the some of the same areas back East.

This. Everyone should be outraged regardless of political leaning by a non elected billionaire gaining access to PII.
