No elkchsr, this was just another one of those catch-and-release chases with the hounds. Heck sakes, if you kill them you have to skin and pack? I hate that.....

thanks for the kind words Utrahunter and WHT MTNMAN, I figured it might get people pumped up for the coming bear season?????hump

Ike thanks for sharing. Question, what would you do if that bear came out of there and went after you? I dont know that I would have wanted just a camcorder in hand....

Well I do not know what Ike would have done

But I ran, and screamed like a 4 year old girl . then I stopped went back and proceded to beat it off the dogs .
Guess the dogs thought boss was helping and I was just holering for someone to bring a gun and shoot it.
It was a mean bear it had been singling out dogs and running them down . It killed 2 dogs before we got there. It was a bad deal just one of those nasty bears .
I had been doing some sneaking into the bay ups and the last bayup was right next to shale slide and I was trying to get over thier real quick so I could do some evaulating ( see which dogs should keep feeding ) and I made it about 20 feet from the edge where there was a tree and some type of cover but right then they came over the lip and were right there 20 feet from me this bear would catch one dog and the others would pile it and bear would let go and then turn to run only to have six dogs hanging on it well instead of going up or down the bear desides to go straight across the shale field that was over 100 yards and I was on his path . I had been crouched down picking up big rocks ( to make me feel better lol) and I stood up and 2 of the dogs took off the bear stopped for a split second and I thought he was going to come at me so I decided to charge myself to take control of the situation , it was a mistake as all but three dogs took off thinking that a devil had come to ruin thier lives , they did come back a little later, and I nailed that bear right in the knoggen and once in the eye the bear turned and ran with dogs attached to his but and he made it to his den and there is where hekilled the dogs. He would come out and hook a dog bring it in and crush the dogs back and neck and then bring it out and grabbed one more before we got therethe bear had lots of room inside but he was just a mean bear.

funny

that's too funny on running like a four year old girl screaming! Cameron, I don't know what I'd do if a bear or lion climbed on during a bayup--but Smiley's comments might well be in line ha!hump

I did have had several lions chewing on my little black and white rodo bitch before, usually in the top of a pinion tree. And each time I never thought about the potential, but rather climbed up screaming and cussing toward the lion figured we were about to fight if it didn't turn my little dog loose. Each time, the lion let go and jumped out over my approaching head like a jack-in-the-box, for which I was glad.

Seriously, a few years back my wife and kids forced me to go get a concealed weapon permit and buy a hang gun. At the time it was illegal to carry a gun in this state unless you had a tag. However, the attorney general went public that it wasn't, and now the proclamation allows for a permit holder to pack. I will say, however, a person better have some marks on them if they lay a bear or lion over without a tag cause they'll most likely have to prove it was self-defense. A guy in law-enforcement once told me he'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.....and I suppose I fell the same way?|oo

Keep'em treed!

I agree with you Ike, carried is better than judged. I have been turkey hunting and had a bear huff and puff at me. And that scared the hell out of me. I feel much more confident packing the 40 than just a 12 ga. I would love to one day go on a pack chase and witness the dogs and bear at it like your video shows. Keep em coming we love em....

If you ever get out this way give me a shout, cause I'm ususally out about every weekend that my wife doesn't have me collared, ha! |oo But you have to be careful cause hounds and bears are addictive.....as they get in your blood. The first bear I ever saw treed was with one of my dogs and two that belonged to a buddy. They had him all night and we walked in the nect morning to find a fat, November boar backed out on a limb in a pinyon tree....he was done after putting up with those hounds all night.

We'd made one tree after dark and cast two more dogs into it. We had just arrived when the boar bailed and took the dogs away. I'll never forget him climbing down and all five dogs grabbing him by the butt, and all that action only feet away. Aint no wonder bear chasin is addictive!hump

Maybe I will plan for some more time my next trip home if the season for bears and dogs is open. Keep em coming. We love em.
