.270 vs 30-06 might be the most debated of all time.

Nothing to debate. You can't get a 180gr bullet for the 270 much less a 200gr! 270 and the 280 come down about the same. Heavier bullet's in the 280! 6.5 CM and the 260? What one will do so will the other!

You can get 170 grain bullets for the .270. Twisted correctly it changes the ol girl. mtmuley

Seems like the HT cartridge of choice for the year I have been here has been the 7mm08HT with a lot of love for .308 and .300WinMag. But the .270 has been viewed as the definitive western hunting gun by many for years. If I was starting from scratch I would have bought a .270, but since I already had 7mm08 and .308 in the safe when I started looking at lopes & elk out west it seemed redundant (so I added a 300WSM instead).

I can't remember exactly but I think the 06 was second and the 7-08 was third in the voting. The .270 surged ahead towards the end of the poll.

There’s maybe 3 big game animals in NA that you might need a 200 grain bullet for.

Hard to say a .270 is overrated when the vast majority of animals shot each year are deer.

OK, I'll toss in on this one. I've never owned an '06 anything, and never will. Gave up on the Mag anything about 30 years ago, and have never not felt under gunned. Even gave up the 308 about 15 yrs ago and went to a 7mm. (recoil and BOOM, it's a 6 lb carbine)

But, now I'm playing with a 338 Fed, just cuz it's something fun to play with and it's a little powerhouse that can easily deliver '06' performance with a bigger/ heavier bullet, less powder, and an easier day on the shoulder at the range.

115gr. Berger, just for equal comparison sake.
250 Savage- low 2,700.
257 Roberts-high 2,900.
25-06 - low to mid 3,100.
25 WSSM- high 3,000.
257 WM- high 3,200.

So the 257 Rob and 25 WSSM are comparable.
WM and 06 are comparable.

None comparable to the 6.53 Scramjet.

I don't think there are any big game animals that require a 200gr bullet, I suspect the 180gr 30 cal will work on everything. Of course there are people that will say a grizzly needs a 200+ grain bullet. I don't believe that's true. what the 200gr bullet give's you is peace of mind! And, a 170gr bullet is not 180grs! Now that's cutting a retty fine thread!

About the last article I read by Bob Milnik he was elk hunting using a 250-3000!

Especially on deer, there's so many cartridges that fill the niche really well it's amazing. I don't normally recommend the 243 for anything over a coyote but I have shot three deer with one and they were all one shot and down! For what ever reason I've got a block there. I suspect it's lack of bullet's, I prefer mid range weight to heavy, not much there for the 243! But I still have to admit that on a deer it will do anything any other cartridge will do. Just a slew of cartridge's available to us!
