Some days are just better than others. This week is teacher appreciation week. Our principal had all the teachers put their names in a bowl, and then had another teacher draw out five names. If your name was drawn the principal agreed to watch your class for a half a day. I don't know if I was more excited about getting drawn or getting a half a day off. Anyway yesterday was the day I was drawn for. Not being one to want to waste a gift, I took my 3rd oldest son out of school, and we took off. He's a senior with great grades and he will be leaving home in a month or two, so I value any father/son time I have left.

It's a little bit of walk to where I like to fish, but the fishing is usually good, so it's worth it. Here is my son not too far from the dam. At this point we had been fishing for a couple hours and he had yet to catch a fish. He had hooked and lost one, but that was it. I'd caught a couple and was starting to worry he might get skunked.

I guess I shouldn't have worried too much. Not too long after the above photo he was able to land his first fish. My son is kind'a known for not smiling a lot. It's not that he isn't happy, he just needs to have a reason to smile. Think we found one.

Here are a couple I caught before he landed his first.

Battle scared bugger. The fish not me. ;) It was pretty cold. We got snowed on and rained on, but we stuck it out and had fun

We went for a pretty long stretch without catching much, when I heard my son call out: "Dad I got one!" I ran down the river to meet him and help him land his fish. He had it already taken care of by the time I got there. This is one of the darkest rainbow trout I've ever seen. Kind'a cool looking.

This last fish was a team effort. My son stood high on the bank and directed my casting. He could see the fish from his angle, but from ground level (water level) I couldn't. It took about 15-20 minutes of taunting the fish but this one finall bit. I have to thank my son as I would not have caught this fish without him.

This photo kind'a cracks me up. It's the same fish as the one above. I had just unhooked it and my son was still higher than me on the bank. He said: "Hold it up so I can get a picture." It is a big fish, but this angle makes it look HUGE! Funny the difference an angle can make.

Back at the car my son was the first to get out of his waders and back into the car. I was back at the trunk putting everything away when I heard him say: "Dad, look at all the deer". I was so busy I hadn't even noticed them. They were right in front of the car, about 25 mule deer. I couln't get them all in the frame at the same time. It was a fitting and proper end to a very good day.

As you can see they weren't too wild.

You're livin' the dream this spring. Your principal sounds like a good egg.

What a cool story.
Always enjoy your posts/pics/stories, thanks.
Very jealous.

Looks like you guys had a blast. I look forward to spending days like that with my sons and daughter. I like that you took him out of school just so you could spend time with him.

I decided to go fishing Sunday afternoon and as soon as my two boys (9 & almost 5) heard I was going they weren't about to be left at home. So any hopes of me doing any quality fishing were gone. We loaded up the gear and took off. It was almost 90* and windy and we never even got a bite. But apparently the first words out of my youngest sons mouth at school on Monday morning were "I went fishing with Daddy! I went fishing with Daddy!!"

So I say our trip was a success!!

Glad you have a good principal. My wife is a 6th grade math teacher. Just from her experiences, I know the value of an administrator that is willing to help the teachers out a little.

Dude, you aren't really smile happy either! But, just like me. This is what you get, but if somebody told a good joke or did something really stupid? Another story then!

That's horse sh!t... I got a pencil and a piece of cake for teacher appreciation week. Of course, I have left school with camo already on (switched during my pe classes) which I've never been yelled at for...yet. Awesome trip.

Years ago a buddy and I would hit that spot after school and pull some nice trout out of there. It seemed like the fish would turn on and off like a light switch. For 20 min or so we'd catch one almost every cast. Then 20 min of nothing, then back to a fish on every cast. Since I mostly fly fish now that river usually gets the best of me when I head up there. I know I can give in and switch back to the spin rod but I'm hoping to one day figure that place out with flies. Only river that gives me fits with the fly rod.

Outdooraddict, you cracked me up. Yes, usually Teacher Appreciation Week is pretty lame. I have to say this was the coolest and most appreciated thing I ever received for it. The worst was 10 years or so ago. I came to work one morning and there was a note in my mailbox stating that it was Teacher Appreciation Week and to show their appreciation for all we do here was a gift. What was that gift that the school board along with the administration supplied? A little tiny eraser about a 1/2" long in the shape of an apple. From my mailbox to the trash can was about 10 feet. I went for the jump shot and it was nothing but net. ;) I would have rather received nothing as opposed to being insulted with that stupid note and eraser. I did notice by the end of the day the trash can had quite a number of those erasers in it. So I'm guessing I wasn't the only one feeling that way. For the record, this stupidity did not happen at the school I'm currently teaching at, and we have a much better school board and aministration than I had at the other school.
