The big difference for me is the 3k you'll spend on a good AT setup vs $200 for some snowshoesThat said, I vastly prefer skis for covering miles.

if you really get into it I recommend something with a heel lift. I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before driving somewhere. Here’s a picture of the shoes I got. They probably aren’t any good because they only cost $80. If I really get into it, I could upgrade, but I think these will work for now. No issues, so I think I will venture out this weekend.
