I’ve had Paul do a couple projects for me over the last year and was impressed by his work. Recently I sent him my favorite Ruger #1 300 H&H. It was a reasonable accurate rifle as long as pressure was kept low, basically it was an 06 with 180s. He put a new barrel on it, improved on my bedding, insured it was free floated and installed his replacement 1/4 rib. I’ve tried a variety of powders and bullets, the worst group I’ve gotten is about 1 1/4. Best groups are with 180 gr. Nosler Accubonds pushed by 69 grains of Reloader 19 generating 2980 fps sd in once fired Norma brass of 5.0.
Last week I shot a 1/4 MOA group at 300 yards; today I shot a 1/4 MOA group at 100 but couldn’t hold it together at 300 yards getting a 4/10 MOA group. I’ll blame the thick crosshair of the vx5 windplex or perhaps my 68 year old eyes.
This rifle, in typical #1 fashion would string up and to the right with the third shot. It would take quite a bit of cooling to come back to zero. All my efforts helped but didn’t solve the problem. Paul knows how to get these #1s to shoot.
I only got 6 shots on target at 300, I was going for 10 but it started to snow and blow full value, so I called it good. There are 2 rounds dead center.
Thanks Paul, I leave on my Moose hunt in two weeks. It sure wont be the rifles fault if I come home eating tag soup.
