i went out this morning with a bad case of cabin fever.i decided i was going to stalk some hogs and see what i could get away with. i ended up with 2 medium size meat hogs but i did learn a few things in the process.
HOGS ARE BLIND: i have always heard this and while i am not convinced that it is 100% true i can tell you that several hogs stared at me at very close range (some around 10 yards)and as long as i was downwind of them they didnt seem to mind that i was there.they knew i was something but didnt know what and didnt spook.

HEAD SHOTS ARE LETHAL: while i am not a big fan of shooting an animal in the head for fear of taking out a jaw or nose and making an animal die a long miserable death i did pull a shot and hit the first hog right behind the eye. the hog flipped twice and didnt move again, very nice since he was right next to a flooded feild, and i mean flooded deep.

HOGS CAN ENDURE ALOT OF LEAD BEFORE DYING: i shot a sow with my .44 mag. i hit a little bit further back than i wanted but still pretty solid inside 15 yards and the pig didnt flinch. it ran by me and i hit it again just trying to knock it down.the hog never missed a beat. we did find it which brings me to.......

CATCH DOGS DONT LIKE WOUNDED PIGS:we put out catch dogs to get after the one i shot with the pistol and they bayed about 700 yards from where i shot the pig.2 pigs got up in 1 palmetto bush and just as we got there broke bay and the pigs and dogs ran off. there was still another pig in the bush and it sort of hopped off and bedded down again a few yards away. it still didnt look hurt but didnt go far either. we couldnt get a good look at it and couldnt tell if it was the one we were looking for but we did get blood where the hogs were laying.then all hell broke loose and one of the other pigs was caught.we worked over to them and saw that this was a small boar( i knew it was a sow i shot) so we collared the dogs and freed the pig(that in itself was a rush).we went back to where the other hog stopped to try to get back on it and the dog bayed right away.the hog stood up and we could see where it was hit so i finished the job

i hope this might help someone who has never hunted hogs and might be planninng a hunt. i didnt take any pics as i was grocery shopping and not hunting for hawgzilla

Guess them Florida Hogs are different than Texas Hogs. JohnSWA and I found out in no uncertain terms that Texas Hogs have excellent eye sight..

like i said dan im not convinced they are totally blind maybe not even at all but these guys didnt seem to care even when i was standing out in the open.or maybe when they get as big as the one you saw there eyes get bigger :)

tnctcb.....Hunted many a hog in the Perry area.....found the same thing you did.....move on them when they're rooting/feeding.....freeze when they look up.....move again when they resume.....hold rifle in "present arms" position and you can bring it up in line to shoot as long as you don't show off to the side movement with your arms, keep your arms tucked in and they will just stand there and look at you. Head shot is good. I use a .44 magnum carbine as my hog gun, sometimes when my GSP "Hog Dog" will corner, I'll use the RedHawk .44 magnum.....not into the Rambo slit their throat thing yet....see too many scars on my dogs.

white deer i think you are right there. try this when you get the nerve up. dont slit there throat. use a 2 man method. one of you roll the pig on its side and step on it about mid way in the ribs and hang on to both legs. the pig is basically incapacitated, he can thrash but not turn around on you. the other person should grab the front shoulder lift it up and stick the knife right into the heart and twist. you will see dark red pumping blood and the hog will die quickly.i dont like the idea of sticking my hand in the face of a hog even the ones without tusks.
