Savage 99 restoration FINISHED

That bluing looks great. I have one of the Remington made 336’s that I was considering having cerakoted (no collectible value). Now you have me reconsidering after his experience…
The mating surfaces in the Marlins can be masked off without issue. They can also be polished back after the fact.

Very nice! I just got my Springfield back from rebluing. A fella in New Brunswick did it using the same process. A beautiful job. Very affordable too. $120 Canadian for barrel/receiver, trigger guard/magazine, rail, and safety. I left the bolt, striker, and extractor polished in the white. 674759294.jpgin the case.jpg

First step was the gently sandblast the coating off and sand it out to 320grit.

I had a hell of a time getting the lever pivot out. Somebody jammed it in the wrong direction and broke off the anti rotation pin.

Starting the bluing process. We're doing a rust blue on this given the age of the rife.
I made a super high faluting humid cabinet out of a ladder and a tarp. A heat gun and humidifier does the work.View attachment 225766

After a couple cycles

This was after 4 cycles. 1st photo is how it looks when it comes out of the high pressure steam bath, then how it looks after carding.

Finally after 6 cycles it gets a coating of mineral oil and cures out for a few days. View attachment 225770View attachment 225771View attachment 225772View attachment 225773

Stay tuned for the woodwork!
Looks great!

Looks great! I have a Savage Model 99 in .300 savage. Bought by my great uncle back in the 60's and passed down to me about 15 years ago. Still have the original receipt and everything. Still in good shape but someday I'd like to have it restored. Its a heck of a rifle for Nebraska whitetails inside 200 yards.

Say a dude wanted to blue a carbon barrel's metal bits. Is that doable?

If you're talking carbon fiber, I'm fairly certain those are done on stainless barrels. You can do black oxide on stainless but I haven't messed with any of it

If you said I missed it. What's she chambered in? Great work on the bluing.
Love my Savage 99 in 300 Savage, great deer round.

Started fitting up the forend. Unfortunately the "undersized" barrel channel from the duplicator wasn't that undersized. It'll get cleaned up with bedding later.
It's a simple process to inlet, just go slow and check often. A lot of people use either inletting black or candle soot, I prefer lipstick. It's easy to see and I've been told it really brings out my eyes.

I've got the buttstock inletting close enough to start working through with sandpaper. I also got the buttplate fit but I didn't grab and photos.
