How does one find out through mapping sources if roads around private property are actually private roads or open to public pass-through? Is there a trick when using OnX, Gai or GoogleEarth to determine this or is there some other online research I would need to do?

Thanks for any help.

To cover our butts and get the final word, we used to go to the County Recorder's office to look them up. I haven't figured out an on-line source yet.

Go to the county mapserver. It will show a map of county roads. Servers produced by Greenwood are usually reliable sources, we use them here in the county where I live.

BLM or National Forest regional offices generally maintain a travel map, which designates the roads within a public parcel that are open for vehicular travel. It changes with some frequency, so make sure you have the latest information. Of course, somehow the Wilks bros. and others are managing to close long-established public roads that cross recently purchased private land, in order to keep you and me out of our public lands. So just because a road has been public for years apparently doesn't mean some uncharitable individual can't unilaterally close it. I still haven't figured out how that works.

most county assessor's pages will have an interactive map w/ types of roads (private, public, county maintained). Some will even be as specific as saying which are paved or gravel.
