I have an opportunity to buy a Remington 770 rifle, but I'm a little unsure on what to do. I've read some horrible reviews on them, but I've seen others that are good reviews. Do any of you have one or know of anyone that has one and what do you think of them?

My hunting partner has one in 300 win mag, it is decent, the action isn't anywhere near as smooth as the 700, but it shoots good.
for the money he doesn't have any complaints.

Just got picked one up in .270 nothing to complain about as of now. Great christmas gift for my wife. Will give you an update after the muzzle break and work is done and she starts shooting it.

My wife has one 7mm08. Absolutely best shooting gun I own. But like said the action is not smooth like my 700

I have a 710(the older version) that I paid less than $300 for new with the 3x9 Bushnell. Same as above. Action isn't the smoothest but it shoots close to MOA off of sand bags and has killed EVERYTHING I have ever shot at with it. My 3 shot zero with Feds in 30-06 180gr NP @ 100m was just barely bigger than a quarter. :)

I used to work the gun counter at a sporting goods store and it was definitely the most popular gun (along with the Savage Axis) because of how cheap they are. A lot of guys would buy one and show up a month later to buy another.

My favorite story is a guy who came in about a week after he bought one and was complaining because he shoved the magazine in backwards and couldn't get it unstuck.

JC, have you been to the ne civie range at Carson? If you are ever up this way let me know. It is pretty nice with out to 600m engagement and just outside gate 20 so that you don't have to register your weapons. :)

The one I'm looking at getting is a 300 win mag. What bullets does your buddy's rifle like?

Unless it's an absolute steal of a price, IMO under $300, I'd probably pass especially since you have a 30-06. Unless it's changed, I don't think the 710/770's can have the barrel's changed/replaced which is a deal breaker for me if it's still the case. Likewise, there are very, very few aftermarket items for the 770. I'd spend that money on either upgrading my optics, a reloading setup (if you don't already), or a hunt for one of the two I have. If you really want a 300 Win for similar money, you can find Stevens 200's in that chambering and price range.

John, If you like it. . .get it. Like most of the others, I agree with the action being a little sloppy, and I'm not a huge fan of the stock. . .but, at the store we sell a ton of this line. I haven't had anyone come back with any bad reviews. The bottom line is. . .if you like it and it feels good against your shoulder and the price is good. . .
I had a 710 model in the .270 and it shot really well.

Isn't any rifle a good one? :) Get it, shoot it, add to your collection / investment.
If you are unsure - you probably have another one in mind?
What would you rather?

Awesome!! I've never been to the range since I usually shoot on my property. I'd definitely be up for shooting sometime, though

The only bummer is that I was told no .30 and above magnums when I shot there. Their reasoning had to do with someone shooting over the crest of the back stop hills and reaching Butts AAF. Whatever :) Here is the link....
