TV news is showing a mid air collision with a commercial flight originating in Wichita on final approach colliding with an Army Blackhawk at Reagan Airport (Washington DC).

60 passengers plus crew. It seems like I should tangentially know more than one person on the flight.

4 persons have been pulled out of the Potomac, but the way it was phrased doesn’t mean they are alive. All traffic in/out suspended until 5 am tomorrow.

I also avoided this airport though meant landing outside of where I needed to go for meetings so cost me time. Runway 33 was being used by this airplane and that is not the norm. Helo activity under landing airplanes is normal for DC. Crazy but normal.

DC is a carnival of lights and moving objects after sunset. Likely the helo was visually tracking the airplane lined up on Runway 1 and never visually detected the plane they impacted since 33 is not the busy runway.

I expect the Control Tower will have new guidelines for identifying what runways are in use as ask a helo if they see the descending aircraft.

Tower: "PAT25 traffic just south of (unclear) bridge is a CRJ at 1,200ft turning for Runway 33"

PAT25: PAT25 has the Traffic in sight, request visual separation

Tower: Visual separation approved.

The runway switch was relayed to the UH-60, as well as instructions to pass behind the RJ.
