I can attest to the quality of my ranger 1000. It does everything I ask of it. I Have yet to experience any fogging with it which is nice. The original battery is still in use after a full year. So clearly, battery life is not an issue. The angle compensation is a great feature, and of course their top notch warranty all add to the value IMO. I Have ranged out to 642 yards on a reflective surface. Never on an animal, but I'm sure it would perform for you at the distances your talking about.
I found my Ranger 1000. I tried it out again and with a brace I ranged a tree at 960 on a bare hill. 600+ to my windmill,so it does work for my ranges....400 and less if I can help it.
