Has your preference for backcountry over base camp (day hunts) changed since you got heavily involved with llamas? In the past, you've stated you prefer the flexibility of base camps but again, llama packing in seems the antithesis of this approach. Llamas are with you on most of your elk hunts (and some of your deer hunts) now and llamas lend themselves to backcountry hunts as opposed to day hunts from a base camp near a road. In the videos of elk hunting with llamas, you always seem to travel in deep far from roads and trails.

Just curious if your stance on this has changed

Hasn’t really changed it much. Often we do base camp hunt and use llamas for retrieval from places is otherwise not shoot an elk.

Sometimes the situation dictates that we do a backcountry camp like in Wyoming this year. Even then I like to camp where we have as many options as possible. This hunt had more horseback hunters in the backcountry hills than foot hunters from the trailheads, so options were important.
