Quick spring Tahr hunt

I had a few days spare to hunt and decided to try a late spring - early summer Tahr hunt. The weather was poor with a lot of wind and rain, but it did clear for a full day.

The full day I hunted I saw 100+ Tahr and a group of 8 mature bulls early in the morning.

After waiting all day for the bulls to again feed down lower in the valley I managed to get close (450 yards) and take the biggest of the group. A nice mature bull of about 10 years old.

The area I hunted is an old high country station (ranch) but is now conservation land with the sheep removed. Now the government is trying to remove at least some of the tahr too.

Awesome Bull, is it a case of get them while you can in relation to the cull?

I haven’t changed my plans due to the cull. There are still plenty around but long term I’d say the numbers will drop and it will be harder to find them.

BTW the old tin hut is an historical private musters hut from the days when there was a lot more sheep in the mountains.

nice one,,for a moment i thought that was crooked spur hut
i see they did 29 hr flying in the hunters hills for around 79 tahr(outside the range area so they spend a considerable time n effort flying them down)

Hunted with Gary Herbert 2017 and have, perhaps had, another trip scheduled for 2020. Covid prevented this trip. Looking forward, maybe, to getting this trip in sometime in the future. Gary Herbert has had some labor problems according to the web news.
The 2020 trip was a graduation present for our only grandchild. He was scheduled for Tahr, Red Stag and Arapawa sheep. My list was Fallow deer and waterfowling. Hope this comes to past. MTG
