Buddy callled me and said that Quebec is changing there seasons and dates on there caribou hunts and it doesn't sound good for the outfitters. I don't know the exact details but sound like the hunt dates would change where the caribou would have already migrated past outfitter camps when the season starts. Reasons were to get the herd size up. If I can find better info I will post but if you have a hunt scheduled for this year you may want to check into this.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a DIY caribou trip planned at the end of Nov staying at the Mirage lodge in Quebec. Hope the changed seaons dates dont interfere with another hunt that's already planned here in the US.

I didn't know you could go on DIY hunting trips in Canada if you are an American. Don't you have to be guided?

This will be my first year going but my friends I am going with have been there the last few years and don't use a guide. here is a link to the website.

The basic package for winter hunt includes lodging and the right of access to the hunting zone. Other available services are optional. The hunter himself provides his/her means of transportation on the hunting territory. At the beginning of the season, a vehicle is used for the hunt whereas in mid December, the use of snowmobile is almost essential.

Services
During the winter hunt season, the following services are available at Mirage Lodge :

■Guides
■Snowmobile rentals
■Chartering of helicopter
■Sale of fuel (gasoline, diesel fuel, avgas, jet-B0
■Dining room with alcohol license
■Sale of game and fishing licenses
■Big game check station
■Cutting and preparation of the game to facilitate its transportation

Friend did say that winter hunts would not start until Dec. 1 at this point there will be no bulls with antlers so hope your not looking for that.

The group I am going with goes on this trip at the same time every year at the end of Nov. I asked the same question about antlers and they said that a few of the bulls antelrs fell off when the animals hit the gound after they were shot but there were plenty of horns to hunt.

Here are the dates directly from the website

Winter hunt period
James Bay region - Hunt period : November 15 to February 15

Here is a copy of my question and response on the horns.

last group that went came hm with 24 bulls. Sometimes when u shoot them the will drop a horn when they hit the ground. Our hunt is sold as the second best dates for a trophy hunt.

I read a part on the website that said the antlers fall off the caribou in nov. What was your success last year, and did any have horns?

Streamer,
I appreciate your concern. Just checked with the leader of our group and he said we were confirmed for 27-30 of Nov. I checked on the season dates and they start Nov 15 for the 2011-2012. They also confirmed that there will be plenty of horns on the animals as this is their 11'th year in a row to hunt the exact same dates and have never had a problem. We will not be using helicopeters, or guides. Just a goold old DIY hunt with my pickup and buddies snowmobiles.

I'm not sure where you are getting your info but I am just going to have to trust my friends who have been doing this trip for 10+ years. Good luck with your trip.
