I hunt public land here in Mississippi and have hunted the same area for forty years…hell my dad says he changed my diapers on the truck seat there when he hunted back in the early 70’s. I have never “claimed a spot there”. If someone gets to a place I intend to hunt I go somewhere else. I did it this morning. Guy pulled in right behind me and we stopped at the same spot. I let him have it for the day.

That being said what makes any hunter go onto public land with four or five of his buddies and make them think that half of the 1,000 acre block belongs to them for the day. So much that they block the road off! Then they get pissed and start cussing at me because I tell them to get out of the road.
The day before that I had a group of dog hunters…deer hunting with dogs is open right now….turn their dogs loose beside my truck and straight into where I was hunting.
Hunting has changed in my state in the last ten years. Especially on public land. Hunters don’t have the same attitude they had towards other hunters as they used to. It’s getting to the point where I’m ready to sell all my hunting gear and sit on the couch.
Is it the same everywhere else?

Yes, it’s the same everywhere.
I ran into a guy here in Montana last week an hour before daylight on a very popular trail who was cursing me out for being there. So I turned off a different direction, then heard him yelling down at me from further up the hill threatening me if I came up there. Obviously I left and hunted elsewhere, not worth getting in a fight over a PUBLIC hunting spot.

This is a topic that certainly has frustrated me over the years. If someone beats me to a spot on public land, I leave and go to an alternate spot. When I get frustrated someone has arrived to hunt where I'm planning on going, I ask myself, is what the other party doing legal? It is. Is it ethical? That comes down to our own moral principles. Why do I always move on to a different location, when I'm the one possibly imposing on another hunter? Because I have no idea how me being there that day, such as where the wind may carry my scent, etc., is going to impact their hunt.

Ugh…that’s crazy.

If I’m hunting public and someone else is at the spot I want to park, I may or may not go somewhere else. I have learned that my hunt plans are seldom the same as other folks hunt plans and that hunting my planned route usually doesn’t lead to interference. Having said that if it involves direct competition or racing to get to the “spot” I am not going to participate unless I was the one who was there first and am already engaged in proceeding with my hunt before other folks show up.

I would take every plate down in the spot, call the game and fish and take care of this. I hope you did file some sort of report.

Slob hunters abound here in Montana. And guess what ... they are mostly LOCALS. You know they're locals by the county number prefix on their plates. Caught a local yesterday leaving a gate down on block management property and driving in past the orange sign that says no vehicle access. Fat bastard could hardly stuff himself behind the pickup steering wheel. Driving a crappy old two-wheel drive outfit tearing up everything. Coupla bums. I closed the gate and added a bunch of "reinforcement" wire to the latch. Extremely cold. I made sure it was not so easy for him to get out of there. Guess he got the message. I checked later and he closed the gate when he left. And yes, cows are on that range.

Then at the Wood Bottom on Marias River I find my bird dog munching on a "gutless method" mess (f*cking bullshit!!)... not twenty yards from the road ... and obviously a fawn by the size of the ribcage. Hide left indicates mule deer. Mule deer fawn/doe are only legal this year on PRIVATE land (more Gianforte nonsense but there it is). Wood Bottom is federal BLM. What kinda slob couldn't pick up a fawn and carry it twenty yards to his vehicle? I would bet my paycheck the guy had #2 county license plates. Yeah, slob hunter arseholes are everywhere these days.

Look at this mess. Same property where the guy left the gate open. Someone shoots a buck way back away from the road. Then cuts off the hind quarters, head, and sorta hacks off at least one front quarter around the armpit leaving most of the shoulder ... and the BACKSTRAPS. Probably left the tenderloins too. Critters had long cleaned out the ribcage. Leaving the backstraps!! Where did that imbecile get his hunters training?

I’ve had people come sit within 400 yards of us at this spot multiple times this year. If we go there and someone’s there we leave. But we usually get there first. I’m like ok so I guess we are public land competition hunting. So far we have won. lol.
