FWP COMMISSION SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON TENTATIVE PRAIRIE DOG RULE

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is seeking public comment on a tentative 2006-2007 annual rule on prairie dog shooting that is unchanged from prairie dog regulations in effect 2002-2005.

The tentative, three-part regulation to conserve prairie dogs on public lands, excluding shool trust lands, includes:

* a year-round shooting closure for the state's small white-tailed prairie dog populations, which occupies about 100 acres of public lands in Carbon County;

* a year round shooting closure on Bureau of Land Management lands within the black-footed ferret reintroduction areas in South Philllips county, also known as the 40 Complex;

* a seasonal closure March 1-May 31 on public lands in central and eastern Montana, except for state school trust lands.

The seasonal prairie dog shooting closure March through May on public lands, except state school trust lands, is proposed to aid in the recovery of black-tailed prairie dog colonies that had plague. This rule also directs early spring prairie dog shooting pressure from public lands to private lands where landowners may choose to control prairie dog populations.

The tentative biennial regulation can be obtained on the FWP home page at fwp.mt.gov under Recent Public Notices, by calling 406-444-2612, or by email to: [email protected]. The current regulations may be found on the FWP web page under Wildthings.

Comments on the tentative annual rule may be submitted in writing through Feb. 10 to: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Game Regulations, Wildlife Division, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701; or by email to: [email protected].
