Prairie elk

Success rates in 27A are like 60% I believe and many of those people aren't serious elk hunters. Great tag but very hard to draw. Throw in an application, but until you draw I wouldn't spend too many calories thinking about it..

Sitting at 21 points so its starting to look more likely.
Nice! 2 out of 7 people with 21+ points drew last year so could happen for sure.
You considering paying for access or only public land? I'd bet most elk in that unit are taken on private. Where in South Dakota are ya?

I only drew one bull elk tag in SD and my hunt was over about 15 minutes after legal shooting light, so somewhat limited experience, but I basically grew up on Angostura every summer so pretty familiar with the area. A lot of the elk I have seen in that unit were just South of the lake mostly on private land, but there is some public mixed in. I have also seen quite a number of dead elk on hwy 18 that runs through public grassland in the NW part of the unit.

I'm in Brookings, east side of state. Got too picky with my rifle tag and passed up one to many bulls. Bird in the hand is better than to in the bush thing. Figured it was probably a once in a lifetime. Have drawn anterless tags and filled rifle and bow. I'm thinking west of the Cheyene river. Below and to the west of unit 3. I'm at 14 for bow but that doesn't mean what it used to. Still got 16 for late season Custer which will probably never happen again.
