So I’ve got an itch to do a custom rifle, preferably with some sort of wildcat-ish round. I’ve listed out the possible starting points, what I would do with them each, and cons of each build.
1. Winchester M 70 carbine flyweight in .30-06. Early 80’s vintage model 70, this was my dad’s gun that he passed down to me. I’m thinking keep the action as is, same with the wood stock, rebarrel with a CF wrapped piece of awesomeness chambered in .30 Gibbs. Cons are that it’s Papa’s gun, and really dad passed it down with the intention of it going to my kids. Also, as it sits (~6.5 pds with a vx3 3.5x10) it kicks like a mule. I can’t imagine that a higher charge weight in a .30 Gibbs would help that.
2. Savage Model 10T in .308. Here’s where it gets interesting, but complicated. This was the gun I built with the goal of 1000 yards for $1000, and got there. Basically junk the entire thing except the action, CF wrapped awesomeness, McMillan stock, upgrade scope from the SWFA 10x to the VX6 2-12 and chamber it in 6.5x.284. Cons - would have to pick up a different .308 because wifey won’t let me not have a .308. So gets expensive because I have to buy a gun to build a gun.
3. Savage Model 116 Stainless in 7RM. I’ve already swapped out this stock and bedded the action, again, add a CF wrapped awesomeness chambered in 7mm x .300 WM. Cons is I really like this rifle. I really do, but my new Ridgeline .300 PRC has made it redundant. Do I really need another magnum type caliber? If I did a .280 AI that would be cool, but not really a step up over the 7RM. Just swap the barrel and keep it a 7RM?
Or just say screw it, find a Model 700 donor action, and start fresh.
What do you think HT? What should I do?
