Pheasant hunting with Pheasants.

Another day, another bird. We only shoot one per day though (no, that's not a self-imposed bag limit, just stochasticity in action). it was a perfect afternoon too. Storms are coming however. Will go back to deer for a day or three now.

This was one of two birds Gus pointed today among many others that flushed. I don't encourage that behavior, but I don't discourage it either. He is an older bird but not very large. I shot one on Saturday that was similar in age (>1 yr), but much, much larger. Interesting variation.

Hard to figure it. I shot a nubbin spur new bird this fall that was so big I had difficulty shoving him into a quart ziplock. This old timer shot the same day wasn't nearly as large.

Oh my! And here we were giving poor Doug the raspberries for not recognizing a prairie chicken from a sharptail. You either need new glasses or a refresher course on bird ID.

Seriously though, would that be a jake? I'm obviously not a turkey hunter.

Well, it's certainly not a ringneck. Wrong feathers on underside. Maybe Lady Amherst? But feet are kinda big for a pheasant. If that were a ringneck (and obviously it's not), it would be this year's bird. Barely an adult.
