Pennsylvania 744# bear

That article and photos are from 2010.

However there was in fact a giant bear killed in the Poconos yesterday, an 813lb bear killed in Middle Smithfield Twp., Monroe County. There was also a 747lb bear in Wright Twp., Luzerne County and a 620lb bear in Centre County

Yes that is an older news story some how it pops up every year but their are pic on the news of the 813 lb bear and the pics dont do it justice

Bigger than western grizzlys. Not sure I could sleep in a tent out there... why do they get so big in PA?

Age/Food/Genetics >> great bear habitat in that area, lots of acorns
That about sums it up. They are versatile animals when it comes to habitat and coexisting with humans. There's virtually unlimited food both natural (acorns, nuts, berries) and human provided (garbage, bird feeders, dumpsters, cornfields). There's no baiting here and hunting is only done through either sitting in treestands or large orchestrated 25 man bear drives which lends itself to some bears in less hunted areas getting big, old, and fat. Thats even though we have more bear hunters by square mile than anyone else by a LONG shot (200,000 bear licenses sold)

Another interesting fact is due to their extremely good health/body condition they start breeding at a younger age (2y.o.) and have more cubs (2-5, 3 being most common).

20,000+ bears statewide with an annual harvest of about 4,000 bears and that hasn't even been enough to keep the population stable. It continues to rise every year

I would love to see some live photos of these giant black bears. My Mom saw, and photographed, a VERY large black bear here in WA that she swears much be part grizz. It isn't, but I'd like to show her some other giant bear pics for reference. Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread...

Here's one that was a little bit of a local celebrity in my old stomping grounds in 2017. No one has got him yet and these photos were taken in the summer time during breeding season. Id wager come the fall he was 650-750

holy tank!
Whats crazy is that here in July he was probably as lean as he was going to be all year after chasing sows around. I'd guess 500-550 lbs in these pictures. By hunting season he was 25-35% heavier and looked morbidly obese. Unfortunately I can't find the photo of him I used to have from November but trust me, he was the stomach-dragging kind of fat and his neck rolls were swallowing his head
