All of you who are interested in bear hunting, here is one to get your excited for the upcoming season. This is one of the Southeast Alaska bear hunts that we do each year, for less than $2,000 per hunter.

My buddy, Joe Treat, made this hunt even better than it normally is when I go alone. His skills at beaching a boat are the best, or at least the most entertaining, of any I have seen.

I hope you all get to do this some day. Southeast Alaska is such a great place and these islands are so cool. If you go there and spend a week hunting these islands, it will be a hunt you will never forget. I promise.

If you like this hunt, I hope you will share it with your friends or on your Facebook pages.

If you want to read the story as it happened in the field, here is the Live Hunt link.

Wow, I did not think that any hunt in Alaska could be done for less than $2,000. Did that include airfare? This gives me some hope on saving up for an Alaska hunt. Thanks for keeping it real.

It pencils out like this.

Airfare, if bought in mid-winter, (at least from my home in Bozeman) - $450-550

License and tags - $400.

Airtransport (we always try to have two to four guys, so air transport can be split among us) - $300 per guy.

Skiff rental is about the same, per guy, depending upon the amount of gas you ask for - $300

That comes to about $1,500, before the extra frieght to get your bear meat and hide back home, which is about $125-200. I don't count food as an extra cost, as I eat whether I am at home or out hunting, and my dehydrated food is about the same as meal costs at home.

If you try to do the hunt alone and paid the skiff and air costs yourself, that would be over $2,000. I usually have one hunter or one/two camera guys, and these costs are really close. I have started taking my own inflatable raft and hunting from that, removing the cost of the skiff rental. I know some places where you wouldn't even need a skiff, just land in the proper areas and hunt by foot.

We have yet to incur more than $2,000 per guy and we have done this trip three times. The camera and production gear we bring is more than what a hunter would bring, so the cost per camera guy is probably more than the cost of an additional hunter.

Just takes some planning and looking for ways to save costs. Splitting costs among hunters and buying airline tickets months in advance are the two biggest savings.

I watched this episode on my lunch break today and the fun that you and joe had was definitely evident. I couldn't believe you guys could keep hunting after Joe jumped/fell in, and then to get a bear too! amazing.

That was a great episode. I know Joe had a great time. Growing up in northern Minnesota you get used to jumping or falling in cold water, beaver trapping and catching suckers by hand

That's a great episode. It's good to hear it can be done for a couple grand. I might be heading to Alaska sooner than planned.

I loved this episode. I need to do this hunt. What is a good week to be there? Now the gears are turning. Need maps. Call all my buddies, see who wants to go. Hmm call buddies that are good swimmers....

Heading up to POW this fall. Can't wait as bear are my favorite animal to hunt and Alaska well that speaks for itself with just those 6 letters. Good huntin'
