Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Other ideas to fill the freezer?

There’s plenty of places you could hunt cow elk and probably have a way better hunt than a Montana general elk tag. I don’t know much about Colorado, but I do know a few places in Colorado that I would be perfectly happy to hunt over the counter elk if you’re looking for a bull. If I didn’t live in Montana that’s what I would do. In one of those places I’m thinking of I know I’d have a better chance of killing a bull than where I hunt in Montana.

Too bad you’re on the other side of the country. Here in NJ you can hunt whitetails from Sept through mid-Feb throughout many areas of the state. In these areas, the bag limits are unlimited antlerless deer and 7 buck tags across the seasons.
You literally have to go out of your way to not fill your freezer here.

I wonder what the price is of the Minnesotan turkey hunter that just got his camper stuck by my house. $2500 for a full turkey? Don’t kid yourself very few people are hunting to fill the freezer, it’s recreation for most.

Oh, I know this, but it is a valid and true motivation for me. There are VERY few options to “save money on meat” while hunting. It’s pretty similar yo driving the truck I do. Hey, I need a truck and transportation!!! That goes for the pedal bike I ride too…

2024 spike elk shot for meat. Son and I debated if we should shoot it opening morning (having glassed 6 points the night before) but both of us knew we shouldn’t pass a meat bull in such an easy pack out spot.

I raised my kids on elk. My wife expects an elk a year for our red meat. She get grumpy if I tell her I passed on a legal bull.

Elk and deer are cheap hunts locally. It’s all my other hunting that turns into the costly recreational hunts.
