Because PF and CDA aren’t complete and total CFs themselves???pondering moving to Post Falls or CDA, just to get out of this cluster eff.
The hunt is from the Vacation budget. Cut & wrap is from the Grocery Budget. All food generated from recreational activities is a bonus.Have you seen the price of literally anything (including inputs for hunting trips)? You'll never convince me that out of state hunts that are cheaper than Costco pork when comparing price spent for pound acquired.
My Daughter and her Husband she met while in college in Spokane went from there to Post Falls and now she is home. Montana is greater. mtmuleyBecause PF and CDA aren’t complete and total CFs themselves???
Was just there last weekend and was so happy I didn’t move up there a few years ago when I had the opportunityBecause PF and CDA aren’t complete and total CFs themselves???
Tons of cow hunts too. They did away with general season cow in a few units. Was just there last weekend and was so happy I didn’t move up there a few years ago when I had the opportunity
I think you could find a few controlled hunts in Idaho that have some crazy good odds, especially cow elk, if just filling the freezer is the idea. I think there are going to be some new controlled whitetails hunts up north this year also
Exactly. I thought about one of them if I have a tough fall for tags. It's a buffalo shoot more than a hunt, but I don't care if I get to take home 800lbs of great meat!Pretty cheap to throw together a cow elk hunt with a relatively short drive. Sleep in your truck/tent/camper and eat instant oatmeal and canned chili. Bet it would be cheaper than a $2500 half a beef. That buffalo shoot sounds like a pretty good deal too.
That's a good way to look at it.The hunt is from the Vacation budget. Cut & wrap is from the Grocery Budget. All food generated from recreational activities is a bonus.
The most underutilized food source in the US, IMO.Roadkill salvage permits.

I have zero problems with deer, but elk is a stretch. I’ve got a couple of spots that feel like a waste of time. They’re either there or they’re not. Kind of a boring non-hunt.I've always gone to costco's frozen goods section. That has to be the quickest way to fill a freezer.
Joking aside. I would get on a chartered fishing boat. Most bang for your buck as far as pound per dollar if you want a guided experience. Otherwise, scout your tail off in WA, there are opportunities to harvest there, though it's tough sledding.
That's a good way to look at it.
I'm just not entirely convinced that "Hunting as a way to feed the family" is entirely honest. Yes there are examples of people shooting a deer/elk/bear/hog in their backyard for the price of a resident tag + 1 bullet, but can we be honest with ourselves in saying that this is the exception. Not the rule?
I love me some Mr. Swanson!
Sounds like you need to spend some time looking for more zones/greener pastures...I have zero problems with deer, but elk is a stretch. I’ve got a couple of spots that feel like a waste of time. They’re either there or they’re not. Kind of a boring non-hunt.
Absolutely for the most part. Hunting around my house is cheap for deer and elk. My kids grew up on cheap elk. However, I’ve taken a lot of hunts that are definitely not cost effective versus buying a side of beef or pork. That's a good way to look at it.
