I'm starting to do research this year for what my buddy and I hope to be, is a self guided backpacking archery elk hunt in CO. next fall. I'm not looking for trophy elk by any means but more important the scenery and experience of packing in for a bow hunt. My buddy and I aren't shy from the torture of packing in, in fact it's almost the highlight of the trip. After seeing all the pics and stories on this site of back pack hunts we both said... We 'got' to do this some day. I said.. ok next year! Then I went and read Cameron Hanes Backcountry Bowhunting and it didn't help stifle the desire one bit.

I guess what we lack now is where to start our scouting and research. Kind of why I turn to you knowledgeable folks. I don't want any honey holes but if any of you got any ideas of units or Natl Forest, public land, that might offer up the challenge for such a hunt I'd be all ears. I'm heading out today for my 9 day solo AZ archery cow elk hunt after work so I might not get back to ya till I return. Thanks in advance though.

I also posted a bit ago as to how complicated is it to get an over the counter elk tag? We both have AZ Hunter ed so we're covered with that. How does the dates, units, hunts break down for archery OTC? I'm interested in an either sex as I'm not quite set on hunting bulls. I've never hunted them in AZ so why start now. But then again I would like the ability to be able to harvest one if I were to get the chance. Again the pack in is more the 'hunt' for us for this trip but having game in there sure would be nice.
