Oregon poaching help

Preference/bonus point rewards for turning in poachers? Pretty cool oregon does that!

Hope they catch him - if they dont they need a new detective.

I wish there were more details. Sounds like there wasn't a tag on the animal if they dont know the identity. Do they use e-tags? Hopefully he didn't leave to get help with packing out and find his elk was gone when he returned! 😅 I'll be interested if there are any updates to this one.

Oregon does use E tags however you are still required to attach a physical tag. It does look like he started to process the animal but left. As I understand the wanton waste law it certainly is an affirmable defense to have started processing, perhaps to the best of your knowledge and experience and gone to get help kind of thing. I’m assuming that defense could prove incongruent in this case. I found it interesting that OSP didn’t provide a location, North East Oregon is a draw unit for Archery Elk. Can’t tell anything much from the photo other than it was a dang nice bull.
I’m thinking this occurred on private ground, background behind the ‘suspect’ has that look to it. OSP game troopers are spread so thin I gotta believe somebody turned him in which is why he left just before the troopers showed.
Poaching is a huge problem in Oregon, an ODFW biologist told me that their studies show as many or more deer and elk are killed by poachers than be vehicles. Hope they catch this guy.

My comment was mostly in jest, I am sure they have good reason for their investigation. Thanks for the additional commentary, I find these cases really interesting. It's pretty impressive when they are able to take down a poacher considering what they are up against!

They are tuff cases to make. The guys photo has been posted all over the state on the news. I bet someone collects those preference points soon.
😁 I did get the joke, what I don't understand is why E tagging and still put a tag on the animal. I've already paid for the privilege to hunt, I'm old so I forget my phone regular, I'm probably inclined to loose it and thankfully I've run into a young trooper every year who gets my phone set up for me, no ticket so far. Absolutely hate e tagging. Give me the old waterproof paper cut out the day and date tape it to an antler with electrical tape and drink a bear while the trooper unwraps the tape to check the tag.

. . . not sure how the bear is going to feel about that.
