Submitted my last application as a WY resident this morning.

Hell of a feeling. Came here with the military as a kid from Wisconsin who’d only chased whitetails. Sure tried to take advantage of the opportunity as best I could, though I’m sure not as good as some of you could have done. Started with squirrels and worked my way up to elk.

I’ve got some long shots and some fail-safes backing those up. Curious what would your picks have been for one last go-round?

Some of my highlights:

That first squirrel with a 20ga Ithaca SKB.

Poor nubbin whitetail was the first big game I shot here, got me thinking, “maybe I can do this?”

First cow. Hell of a trip.

First bull. Got me out of a Halloween party with the wife’s coworkers.

My only Sandhills with my sweet Tika puppy.

Checking trail cams with my oldest daughter.

Lucky enough to draw this tag twice in 8 years.

Cow I shot with my dad.

This years buck.

Where are you moving to?

I’ve never been in a state I had to apply for the “main” species. Ohio was whitetail and now Montana is elk and deer OTC as a resident. Not sure where you’re moving to but I would have chosen something I wouldn’t be able to hunt wherever you’re going, or an area to hunt that is significant/memorable to you.

Where in Wyoming did you shoot that fox squirrel? I didn’t think there were many west of Mississippi and have only seen them in towns in Montana.

Washington state, so all the species but antelope will still be available, just quality maybe/probably/definitely reduced. Maybe on the right track, threw in for a new antelope unit with low draw odds with a safe bet second choice. Shot that fox squirrel just outside Torrington, WY. Come to think of it, yeah he wasn't that far away from ag fields out there.

Thanks for your service. Where is your next adventure?

Eastern Washington.

Great write up! Good luck on your new adventure out west. Being Washington you may have to work a little bit harder for big game but they are here.
Think about taking up Waterfowl hunting, there is a lot of water around.:)

That's a great progression!

Throw in a mule deer hunt as well.

Wyoming spoils people. :)

It sure does. That big mule deer eludes me, I put in for a REALLY low draw odd unit for one of those. I have a 2.5 year old for my first mule deer buck that was rubbing really hard on burnt trees, so his antlers are almost black. Euro went bad, need to find a way to display them.

I really pounded the waterfowl when I lived in western Washington. Some of my fondest memories. If I ever shot another wigeon it'd be too soon. The mallards on the east side though, I don't know that a person could get sick of them. Back to putting in for the refuge hunts I guess!

Geez, people already flocking to Washington not even a week after that record book Yard Bull is shot. May the odds be ever in your favor and you find a yard with a similar bull. #YardBullChasers

(This is supposed to be a joke/sarcasm please don’t take this seriously).

I’m shooting that thing 10/10 times he steps in my yard.
