I am in a similar boat as i have an accumulation of once fired brass that I have collected with the intention of reloading one day but now with kids that chance is 0... I have once fired brass for;

300 Win Mag
6.5-300 Wby Mag
6.5 CM
280 AI

Zinc is a dull color usually found in handgun ammo. Nickel plated is shiny and found in both handgun and rifle. Don't take that as gospel, but that's my understanding.
