Okay Kids....

A water bag that kept water cold by allowing a little bit of it to seep through the canvas and evaporate in the wind as the car went down the road.

Looks like the bag that my mom had on the clothesline for all the clothespins! haha....

does look like some kind of canteen though.

Canvas canteen it is. Remember as I child screaming across the desert in SE Idaho headed to Arco or Howe with that on the side of dad's old '53 Ford pickup. Sometimes we drank, sometimes the truck did.
Just went outside about 20 min ago to see if any water remaining in it. Still about 2/3 full and nice and cool water just from the evaporation and is currently 80.1 here and is just hanging on the patio. Water would be cooler if it was moving about 50 mph?

They used to sell those at every gas station along Route 66 down in the desert southwest back in the 50's and 60's, and they really pushed them to all the people passing through. Don't know what happened to mine.; yeah, I bit too. They recommended placing it in your grille in front of your radiator to help cool the engine. Memories of days gone by.
