Nov elk hunt

I didn't have enough time to fill my elk tag with my son getting sick during the early season.Question is how far down do you think the elk would be in mid-nov.Is this all dependant on snow depth or will any measurable snow start driving them down out of wildErnest and towards more openot BLM land.Just wondwring what you guys look for/hunt during Nov seasons.I'm bummed I don't have any elk meat in the freezer and hope to change that after Mule deer hunting in Co

IME it depends on the elk. Bulls will stay up in their post-rut sanctuary areas for quite awhile, even in deeper snow. At least around here, I can usually count on the cows and calves moving down by mid-November, which is usually about 1-2 feet of snow accumulation.

In my experience it will either take heavy snow or snow that has frozen and thawed a few times to make the main herds start to move, but I've also seen these conditions in effect but hunting pressure still keeps them in the black timber near timberline. Only way to know for sure is scouting, scouting, and some more scouting.

Based on my limited experience, it is wholly dependant on snow depth. Last year in wyoming for example, we hunted Sept without luck so we planned a late season hunt. Snows came in Oct and early nov. Work and holidays got in the way so we planned for December. December came around and the 2 feet of snow that had landed in the higher elevations melted after thanksgiving during a warm spell and the elk moved back up high. We found the bulls up at the same elevations as September. Fortunately we got a foot of snow during the last week of season and it began pushing the elk back down. We took 2 cows during the last week and they were still within 1000 of the highest areas.

Elk will come down early if there's a very unusual amount of snow. Normally, they come down as the days get shorter. They'll still come down if there's no snow if its getting late in the year.
