So three years ago I get really interested in getting out west annually for hunting trips. I've applied 3 years in a row for a Elk unit in the Big Horns and have not yet drawn, but earned the points. The last 2 years I have came out to Wyoming on antelope hunts, which have been a blast.

So this year, I am thinking that I'm sick of waiting to draw one specific bull elk tag for the Big Horns, and am contemplating a easier/guaranteed draw cow hunt to get my feet wet a bit in elk hunting.

I've been looking at unit 7 as a possible cow elk, all public rifle hunt for late October. One main question:

Can I apply through the Wyoming draw system for a cow tag without burning my points?

and

If I get a cow tag, can I still buy a point for a shot at a bull tag next year?

You will lose your points if you draw a type 4 (full price) cow tag as a first choice. If you draw a type 4 as a 2nd choice then you keep you points. Type 6 and Type 7 tags do not use, or affect your preference points.

Not to hijack your post but i aslo had my eye on this unit as a type 6 cow hunt for next year. I see the population is over quota hence the large number of tag holders but if i go out during type 1 tag will i be disappointed with the number of hunters? Im willing to walk miles to get away from roads but is the pressure there as high as ive been reading or is most the grip from road hunters? The high number of game and success rates have me looking at it for a first elk hunt for this guy. Any one been there can chim in on this? Thanks.

I was told that Wyoming has a general elk tag that is easier to draw and if you don't get an elk during archery season then you can come back during rifle season. If that is the case would that be a decent bull elk tag to try for, for someone just starting?

From the sound of this thread it sounds very complicated to apply for a bill elk tag???? For someone who has never tried to apply for an elk tag what's the best way to learn what to do? I'm the type of person who wants to hunt for the experience and chance at filling the freezer. I like working my way up, so to speak. Yes I'd love to get a trophy but the thrill of the hunt is a lot of the trophy to me.

I've tried looking into to regs but it looked confusing.

Sorry if I hijacked this thread.

I've been looking at the unit also and I think the type 6 tag is only good in the eastern part of unit 7 or private property in the rest. Type 4 is good for the whole unit. I'm not sure what tag to apply for myself, good luck to everyone.

I though it read from oct 15th till dec 31st for type 6 open for whole unit. Aug 15th till oct 14th the rules change per county in unit 7 on type 6. Or at least this was in 2016 regs. I believe that's how I read it forgive me if Im wrong on that.

If you have 2PPs you could draw a general elk tag in the Regular Draw and that tag allows you to hunt in any unit that is designated as a general tag and there are over 50 of those designated units. If you draw the tag and want to hunt the early archery season in any of those units, you would only need to buy a $35 archery permit. If you don't fill the tag in the early archery seasons, then you can return during the later rifle seasons and the dates vary from unit to unit for both the early and rifle seasons.

This is correct

Area 7 has hard access to get for elk hunting. Some public ground but mostly private for the majority of the elk hunting. Same for area 6 across the highway. The type 6 tags will be hard to find early season access, during the bull season. The HMA's will be your best bet early and maybe late season. Aug. elk hunting deals with warm weather.
