New tag policy

Many are complaining about costs of tags and expecting even bigger increases in fees and reductions in tag numbers. I have a fun propasal that will never happen but in theory would result in some interesting changes, what do you think.

-When you buy (or drawn) for a NR elk tag you have to purchase the number of days tag is good for with state impossed limits and date ranges.
example: i draw a idaho? tag in controlled hunts. The tag is $100 a day(idaho sets rate), i have to set the dates for that hunt. So if i buy 5 days its $500 for a elk tag but thats it, on day 6 i go home.

What got me thinking is how much a 5 day NM tag costs compares to a 3 month WY or 4 month MT tag and if i was to mix in sucess rates it would really complicate best value in tags. I think could open up some additional tags cause financial consideration would directly impact sucess rates and hunting skills would effect obviously. I know its stupid but i am bored and its better than looking at 20 year old newguy dug-up threads about yotes and snowmobiles, what you think?

Its only less days if your a cheapass, could buy MANY days or just one. How good of a hunter are you and are YOU willing to bet on it?

I got one week to get it done regardless of the tag. I like where your going with it though. That's what I was saying in the other thread when you break it down if you have time wyoming tag is a great value considering all the time you've got to hunt. If your actually placing the value on the experience instead of how many dead animals your "buying" it's a no brainer.

Biggest issue I see is there is no way to enforce this.

I like Colorado’s system (even though I’ve never hunted or applied there) with the season broke up. Seems that would give more control to the state over hunter dispersion? For instance, what you describe there would be a majority of folks coming for archery for that middle September time. I also don’t think your idea would change much, if anything because few are hunting 4 months as it is now so it would basically just bureaucratize what hunters are already informally doing. The only thing I see your idea changing is saving you $300 (in your personal example). Also to your counter argument that you can buy as many days as there are in the season, do you really think anyone is going to buy 30 days for a $3k tag? Or 40, etc.?

You’d be CPWs *Commission’s least favorite NR witness with that truth… according to them every NR hunter buys a room, sponsors a local youth and starts a nonprofit in the unit they hunt.

NRs… don’t @ me… I know you spend money locally, but CPW acts like towns are going to collapse if the R/NR matrix gets shifted.

Policy! Its like when you buy a temp fishing license and need to fill in dates.

@Dsnow9 draws a wyoming general elk mid may you find out. You have a deadline lets say 1July to select your dates at $100? day. You say i want to hunt oct 5-14, wyoming bills you the 10 days @$100ea =$1000 and sends you tag with those dates printed on it. Weather, life stuff whatever your locked in and have those 10 days to get it done.

Back in the day I was pretty generous at boosting the local economy especially in taverns and any given gentleman's club within 75 mile radius along the ride home after tags were filled. Nowadays I'm in and out as cheap as possible.

There are a few establishments in wyoming and idaho i feel like i should be a part owner of as much money as i have sunk into them during hunting season. They only thing they gave me was hangovers!

I must be boring, but drinking is the last thing I think about while hunting. That said, the Chinese & Mexican food @Dsnow9 and I devoured after hauling out elk in WY and Co, respectively… that I thought about a lot. And was happy to support the local economies with my funding.

after being on mountain for week or two, go bar and take shower (yes thats a thing at these bars) eat a hot meal and have cold beverage. Maybe run into some people you know or get to know some new people. I have some great memories doing just that, hell even got to meet Nick last year at one during a hunt of his.
