quote:
A bill that would reclassify as livestock all deer on Iowa breeding farms and hunting preserves has touched off a debate over how best to monitor and control the potential spread of a deadly brain disease that has affected wild deer herds in other states.

The bill, which awaits Gov. Tom Vilsack's signature, would remove regulation of captive deer from the state Department of Natural Resources and turn it over to Iowa Department of Agriculture officials. The agriculture department would be responsible for monitoring the deer for chronic wasting disease.

MY OPINION: The breeding farms are rather blatant about their desires, it seems. They don't like the regulation that will be required by the DNR to control CWD, so they want to move over to the Ag department where it's easier for them. Never mind what's best for the animal population.

Looks like another instance of special interests beating the common good to me.

It happened in CO in 1995 and look where we are now. This is what happens when you put a department in control whose number one priority is profit for livestock growers. You Iowans have fun....
