New CWD Positive deer near SD/MN Border

I live in a CWD zone. Origin was from a local deer farm. Farm owner was loud and vocal that DNR was overstepping and he worried more about his penned deer getting CWD from outside his fence.

Then an infected deer showed up just outside his fence. When authorities visited his operation he had numerous sick captive deer and a handful already dead....those not too far gone were tested and they were infected with CWD.

We have had extensive testing and only one other infected deer has been found...again, not far from his captive operation.

Liberal...but not unlimited...tags have not done much to our deer population. Wish our neighbors would have shot a few more this year, we have plenty!

I think if no more positives are found next fall they will stop testing and be a tiny bit more conservative on tags. Lots of private land with controlled or no hunter access here, wouldn't make much difference if they tripled bag limits but the smaller amounts of public lands might get pounded.

This has been the way of things from the beginning. The outcry against any restrictions is always tremendous so the agencies always fall back to “monitoring”.
Just seems like a bad idea to start feeding deer in a place that had positive cwd. Nothing like inviting it back if it really is as serious as some say. We've never had legal feeding/ baiting here. At least in my lifetime. Although 20 years now with cwd now and were in the same exact place we were on day 1. Actually I take that back we add new positive areas all the time. (Speaking to my state)

Baiting... thankfully...is illegal in MN.

Baiting in SD is also illegal but the local hardware stores seem to carry a lot of it. "Probably just for people to get pictures with."

You do realize there’s a giant lake in between Wheaton and SD correct? I’d say it’s an isolated area from SD.
