Well the 2018 season was short and sweet for me. I only managed 2 evening hunts in bow season due to lack of time and poor weather on days I had time. Today was opening day for our firearms season. I'd scheduled the first three days off. For once, I was excited about season. I had time, and I recently gained permission to hunt the 100 acres behind me. It has always been leased. The owners, however, are going through a divorce. As such, they couldn't lease it so they gave me permission to hunt it late last week. Luckily, I had a pretty good feel for the property as they had let us shed antler hunt over the years. We found some really nice sheds last spring....one buck my son and I watched all summer was a sure booner.
The weather was atrocious this morning.....40 mph winds, rain, sleet...horrible. I made it to the backyard, rescued my hat 3 times, and decided I'd wait for the evening hunt. I set the spotter up upstairs and glassed every few minutes just in case a buck was stupid enough to brave the wind. I know, I know not exactly western hunting
This evening, I had a perfect wind to hunt where j wanted to....a crest between two low points in a picked bean field between their bedding area and a picked corn field where I have been seeing all the deer activity in the evening. I knew they would use these low points as travel corridors. Here in Ohio, we can only use straight walled, muzzleloader, or shotgun. I've been using a 45-70 the last few years, so I'm limited to under 200 yards, which both of these low spots were within. I was content to shoot the first deer that showed this evening, because we need the meat. In Ohio, I'm pretty much a meat hunter anymore. The trophy hunting is all confined to the leases. Anyways, at 5 on the dot, my meat showed up. 65 yards, shoulder probably toast but the heart is still good! He's a crazy looking thing, I love it! And the best part is my oldest boy got to participate in the recovery.
