Musk ox Oder?

I have a great chance for a must ox caribe combo in September. Posted the question on taxidermy site but no response. If tanned properly, would a full body musk ox mount have a smell? I ask as I shot a Corsican and Spanish goat ran in NZ and even with a wet tan they hang in my barn today. I did a full body on an Ibex from Spain and had to encase it in glass to keep it in the trophy room. Was told by several taxidermist that on most goats you never get the smell out. A few others say you have to put an additional additive in the pickle to get out the smell. That had me thinking if I would have the same issue with the musk ox. I wondered about by two nasty smelling Javelinas but they turned out great and not smell. Any ideas?

I did a combo Musk ox/Caribou hunt in 2004. It was a September hunt which was MUCH more comfortable than the -30 to -50 below zero winter hunts. The hair on my Musk ox was long and thick. I did not notice any smell when I killed my Musk ox, and to answer this post, I just stuck my nose into his fur, and again NO SMELL. Mine was a great hunt and I would recommend it to anyone. A full body Musk ox mount takes up about 8' of floor space, but I'm still very glad that's how I did mine.

Thanks for the response. If I may ask how did the caribou part of the trip go? I am looking at going with North Safari and it seems they focus on the Musk Ox but between the line seems not to have a great expectation for a bou. It took 9 days in the NWT to get on a good caribou that actually made P&Y. Yup since getting away from 3/4 and shoulder mounts the full body mounts do take a ton of space. I just got my Nyla and Bontebuck back.

I’ve had mine for years, the only thing that still smells are the caribou parkas. Musk ox has no smell to it really. I mean technically, yes, everything does, but it doesn’t have a detectable odor to me or mine.

Nice Nyala and Bontebok full mounts. I did a half mount of my Nyala and a shoulder mount of my Bontebok. I have a few full mounts, and yes they do take up a lot of room. I have a couple of small African cats and my Mountain Lion that I am waiting to get full mounted, then I am out of room.

I believe you can go into your post and edit out the multiple pictures.

A little while back I posted a thread on the "Other Big Game" Forum titled "My Quest For Caribou" where I told some of my Caribou/Musk ox hunt. Basically there were 4 of us in camp, we were allowed 2 caribou each, and all 4 of us shot a B&C Central Canadian Barren Ground Caribou. My Musk ox also qualified for the B&C all time record book. Also on that trip I got in a day of fishing, and one night saw the most spectacular display of Northern Lights that I have ever seen.

I know what you mean. I hunt my lion every year and went in a quest to get a 200 mule deer. Not counting many Canada trips and hunts across North America 3 trips to Africa 2 to New Zealand , SE Asia, Australia, Kazakhstan and Spain has filled the trophy room and my office. So what solution? Build a larger trophy room. Problem solved

I've been around a couple dozen muskox mounts, none of them have smelled. Might call a taxidermist in Alaska and ask

That’s just part of the 64 and don’t count skulls or the MT. Griz, 212 inch mule deer, 2 javelinas, 2 more black bear 4 more Tom lions either in the freezer or at my hunting / fishing buddy's place who is also my Taxidermist. Nor my Timber Wolf or Coastal brown and Mt. Goat that are on display in his Taxidermy show room. Most folks in SE Louisiana never have see these critters. Oh forgot the 13 foot gator I am getting made into a rug. Trying to buy a rattle snake to go with the two Javelinas. Since skull mounts are cool the wife allows me to keep my water buffalo, lesser kudu, impalas and a few others in the den. The others are either in my office or the trophy room. Since seeing the full body musk ox, got to do that and with shoulder mounts being common, like doing 3/4 or full but really like the scenes that look like what you see in the wild. Can’t help it. Told the wife if something happens she can make it all back as tons of folks out there buying and selling other peoples trophy collection. My buddy the taxidermist makes a killing renting out mounts to the movie folks in New Orleans.

Thanks I was just curious as after finally getting a dram idea hunt, getting a trophy of a life time, then have to encase it in glass to get that goat smell out of the room was not expected. And to have a Corsican and Spanish goat that hang in my barn has me very Leary on getting smells out in the tanningbpricess. As my taxidermist and a few other have said, with some of these goats there is nothing you can do to get that smell out. Seems the musk ox is not an issue like the goats.

I dry tan all my skins and when I rehydrate stinky skins like goats, I soak them in a deodorizing agent. It's sold in taxidermy catalogs but like many taxidermy supplies they are products you can find in local stores but they have repackaged them for a higher price. It smells like a janitorial cleaner.

A former member on this site that has since passed, sent me a deodorizer and suggested I try it on the Corsican and Spanish goat. No joy. Taxidermist in Spain should have added it during the tan or I should have wet tanned it.
