I have hunted since 1975 (+/-).
Hunted Montana since 1985.
Worked for the Montana public hunter for over 30 years.
Have seen, lived, experienced Montana hunting - warts and gems all - more than most on here. Fact. Couldn't say that if I hadn't did what I did for a living.
That being said,
Can't say I'm sold on this program.

Just one person's view. YMMV.

I’ve heard of this off-hand but don’t have any direct experience. What is the general consensus of the pros/cons of this from experienced Montana hunters on this forum?

Does anyone know if there are tangible results ‘trickling down’? I.e., are ‘graduates’ getting legitimate quality private land access?

Also I’d be curious to see if they offer any discounts in either cost or hours to folks who have a high level of experience already, such as onpoint addresses above. For instance, say a certain fella and his hunting partner have a background in high level military marksmanship and combat paramedicine. Could we skip those parts? Interesting program.

There are forum members who are graduates.

Currently, 18 properties are enrolled in the program, I think around 180,000 acres. Access has varied from cow/doe hunts, to one hunter taking a B&C Mulie.

There are no "discounts" for experience. Frankly, marksmanship is roughly 10% of the curriculum.

Man, I was really hoping they'd have a Kalispell class this year. Looks like I'm going to have to try to get into the Missoula class. Who can I butter up to make sure I get in? ;)

Kalispell is in the plans, not sure if it will work out for 2021 yet or not.

Seems like the course only guarantees cow and doe hunts. Correct me if I am wrong. I just don't see the benefit to pay for this course. mtmuley

I read the MTMASTERHUNTER.COM website's contents stem to stern. Some interesting stuff there.
The policies, procedures, and requirements section suggests (to me at least) that applicants need already possess many of the "things" the course teaches and attempts to instill in the students when they apply.
So the participants practice skills they already have and talk about the ethics, philosophies, beliefs, and core competencies they already possess. Thus after the course they are a little more skilled and a little more self and resource aware than they were a couple days earlier? And the graduate upon completion is now a Master Hunter?
And oh yeah - they gain access to a few places the rest of us can't access????

I would genuinely and sincerely like to hear from past graduates of this course, to better my understanding.
As I already mentioned, I have some "interest" in the genuine utility, purpose, and necessity for this deal. I spent my entire career working with all kinds of hunter and anglers - it's more than just a passing interest.

If it's really just something cool to do, and that's it, so be it. I guess that is cool. And, nuff said.....................

$345...

I'm not sure how many hunters are going to be willing to swallow their pride and engage with that level of condescending pedanticalness. I very much enjoyed the bit about a 6 page essay in Times New Roman 12pt.

I'm sure it will be hot with the adult onset newly minted Montana resident hunters fresh from their ivory towers ready to tell everyone how they're doing it wrong and post all about it on the gram (so me circa '13 😉 )

Here's a novel idea for those who are compelled to offer an opinion on every single thing, often which they have no/little information from which they have formed such opinion; provide something beneficial to the topic or don't post anything at all.

Seasons are almost over. If these kind of comments are indicative of what lies ahead this offseason, it appears my moderation will take a heavier hand.

Not sure if any of the critics, skeptics, experts on all topics posted, have personally talked to anyone who has completed the program or have talked to anyone involved. I have and all I have talked to found the program to be worthwhile.

But, what would they know, against the vast experience of the resident Hunt Talk experts?

I hope the program continues and is s smash hit, critics/skeptics ignored. I appreciate the huge volume of work invested by those willing to try something different.

Fair enough!

While not being a graduate myself, I have talked to those affiliated offline about the program.

While it seems the type of access gained may vary, one of the reasons I am strongly considering applying is the opportunity to network with like-minded folks in the hunting world. As a fella who’s moved a lot, and doesn’t come from a hunting family, I am always looking for a chance to get involved with the things I care about in my local area.
