Transmittal.

We're coming up on Transmittal on the 24th of February. That means no more bills may be introduced unless they are "revenue" bills.

Some of the revenue bills being introduced late were:

SB 390 which raises the conservation license fee to give money to wildlife services (which kills coyotes for sheep producers).

and HB 576, which would reclassify Mtn Lions as predators

There will be a lot of floor action over the next few days as both chambers try to clear the dockett with an immense number of bills that have stacked up. You can follow the House floor action online and the Senate floor action online

Also of note - there is an access rally at the Capitol on March 3rd, 2011, in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at 2 pm. At 3 pm, the Senate Agriculture Committee will hear HB 309, which would severely limit your ability to access rivers and streams in Montana.

This bill needs to meet serious opposition. If you can travel to Helena for this, please do so. Folks are working on getting buses lined up to bring folks from Great Falls, Billings, Missoula and Bozeman. As those become available, I will post the information.

Things will pick up substantially next week as committees get back in to the swing of it, and bills that have moved from one chamber to the other start back up.

If you, or any of your friends, are having problems with what is going on at the Legislature, now is the time to write your Letters to the Editor, opinion pieces, etc. Get the word out that we are under attack and the keys to the wildlife treasury are being handed over to the forces of privatization and market hunting.

HB 576 becomes a revenue bill because it has a fiscal note.

Kinda like how Ketchup is now a vegetable for school lunches.

Jeeze,,,I was talking with a couple of our guys today, thinking maybe we could get the spear bill ammended to include the silencer bill, whereas all spears would require silencers,,,damn good idea and would fit right in with this session.

Ben, who's "in charge" of this access rally. I would appreciate any info as I will pass this on to a lot of Gallatin Valley folks. A bunch of people showing up there next week is a great idea. Makes me smile to think of a bunch of outdoorsmen/women showing up for the cause....we can be a formidable force if we can get together. Hope I can swing a day off work to make it.

Montana SB 237....another bill with very threatening implications for Montana elk populations and for those of us who hunt and appreciate these critters. How do hunters like the word "depop". As extreme as this is, lots of elk populations
share habitat with large numbers of cattle.......not to mention more misdirection of license dollars.

thanks Ben. As I still refuse to participate in facebook, my more open minded lovely wife said she'll check it out for me. like I stated in a different thread, Montana TU has some good people working for us at the state level.

Up tomorrow in the Senate:

SB 301 - Prohibit FWP from buying land

SB 303 - No net gain of state lands (No more public land in MT)

SB 306 - Repeal Cyanide Heap Leach Mining Prohibition (This was an intitiative that passed with 62% of the vote)\

SB 317 - Gut MEPA (Montana Environmental Policy Act)

These are all coming up for action tomorrow on second reading. All of these bills will reduce your opportunity to hunt and fish if they go through.

Want another Mike Horse dam?
Want another Berkley Pit?
Want even less public land than we have now?
Want to eliminate your voice in government?
These bills get us there.

Contact the legislature and tell them NO!

It just keep going and going and going.

I finally couldnt take it any more and started e-mailing and calling my local reps.

And to think I could take this year off. Worst bill year I think I have seen!!

SB 317 just passed the Senate 27-23

The Montana Legislature just voted to weaken our bedrock environmental protection law. In debate on the Floor, Senator Vincent mentioned that he worked with most industries on the bill, but no conservation groups.

In an attempt to make FWP pick up dead critters on the road, the MT Senate just voted on SB 83. The bill failed 14-36.

The sponsor is the chairman of Senate Fish and Game.

SB 301, which eliminates FWP's authority to purchase land has just passed second reading in the Senate. Here's the vote count

SB 302, which creates a no not gain of State public land in Montana. That means no more wildlife management areas, no more state parks, no conserved winter habitat. It just passed the Senate 27-23

Senator Kendall Van Dyk of Billings stood up for hunters and anglers on SB 303, and Senator Tom Facey of Missoula stood up for hunters and anglers on SB 301. Send them your thanks!
