MT Legislature - Week 6

Executive Action from today:

House FWP:
HB 363 - Provide for use of wolf license money
Amended to strike section 1. Essentially guts the bill, and puts in statute stuff that FWP is already doing, while directing license dollars to be spent on one specific species. - Passed 12-8

House AG:
HB 471 - 15 Breeding Pair Maximum Objective bill -Dan Kennedy
Hearing was short. No proponents.
Passed Committee 12-7

Senate Fish and Game:
SB 212 - Amended to eliminate section 6, but still contains problematic language that does little to further bison conservation. - Passed Committee
SB 255 - Establish Criteria for FWP Commission decisions. Amended to include fishing and trapping - Passed Committee

SB 255 - Establish Criteria for FWP Commission decisions. Amended to include fishing and trapping - Passed Committee

The worst news of the day. A disaster for any management decision, which now requires social and economic concerns be given the same priority as biological issues.

This needs to die somewhere along the way.

These maintenance issues look horrrble for FWP. FWP doesn't have the funds to take care of what they have. ie. they need more money. You and I both know where that money comes from. So people get pissed and try to make a law. The crappy part about the maintenance issues is there are money sucking reoccuring issues like weeds, roads, and what not that take money from what decreasing budge FWP has.

Now try and convince the public (which the majority are not hunters and fishers) to take money from one program and give it to FWP and you've got a challenge.

So what happens is they look for revenue in the form of a fee to use a campground, or a filming permit, or and extra archery tag, or what ever. And some of the areas FWP owns they can only simple afford to start closing them down to public use.

You make it sound as though MT resident hunters and anglers are being "maxed" out on tag fees.

Raising resident license fees to something more than the current joke is probably worth a thunk...

Shouldn't these guys be looking for Saddam husseins weapons of mass destruction or something. I mean, there's got to be some other BS they could be doing.

Totally over blown. This is politically motivated. You need to read the threads Big Fin, and Tjones posted. They explained it all too you, but your pushing your own uneducated agenda. BTW, the F&G have the funds, the legislature wont allocate them to be used, When they make cuts across the board, they cut FW&P's funding too. Even though, this agency is loaded, are you following this? What your trying to sell, we're not buying.

I was a bit surprised at how cheap deer and elk tags were for residents out here even considering I only had to pay $12.50 growing up to shoot five deer, three turkeys, and a bear.

I dont know about anyone else, but this is getting ridiculous. This letter writing campaign is becoming a full time friggin' job...I think I'll start calling more and typing less.

I hear ya Buzz, its a wonder I still have my job.

I'm with the rep from Butte who stood up and called them out on wasting time on revising the definition of a ditch when they promised they would work on jobs. Bunch of pissed off ranchers get voted in this session or what???

Was it Rep. Yates? That guy is honest, wants to get stuff done, and is a HUGE asset for the Sportsman. I support him 100% and I wish he was the rep for my district.

It was Rep Noonan. I like Rep Yates. He's not a 100% vote for us, but he's thoughtful, smart and gets hunting and fishing issues. He's been one of the few voices on that committee that stand up for public land hunters, and for access.

Here's the executive action for today:

I left at 8 pm. The committee had one or two more bills to take action on.

I see some wins in there Ben, some I don't remember what the hell they are, hang in there man and I will see you tomorrow. I will buy you a beer.

Connell did well today on HB 475. He lost two bills and got the trapper ed one out of committee. Bucket Biology bill was a good one. Flathead guys asked for that.

Damned shame the bison bill didn't move forward. Maybe next session.
