More trouble in AZ

Good Buzz. Just don't threaten to take away federal grazing land. I'm sure everyone in Arizona appreciates your help and interest..

Danr, I didnt threaten to take away federal grazing, its pointless to do that.

However, I think the AZGF could make suggestions to the State Lands board on perhaps managing state lands more for wildlife and less for cattle...

I didnt mention that in my letter either, but if those ranchers want to get shitty over the LO tags, I'd put some pressure on my state reps to return the favor by strong-arming them on their state leases.

Two can play games...

My meeting with Bill McClean last night, went well. He is an easy guy to talk to and is very passionate about hunting and game management. We discussed some of the ideas that I had and some that had been proposed at other meetings. By and large, most of the folks at the general public meeting, held later, were in favor of raising prices for out of state tags. Currently, this is not possible. The price limitations are set by the Legislature and are maxed out right now.

Basically any action taken by AZGF will take a year or more to come to fruition.

They are currently permitted to govern the actions of guides, but not outfitters or booking agents. That will be addressed with the AZGF Legislative Calendar this year.

One of the biggest helps that AZ hunters can provide is to contact thier state legislators and express support for the AZGF Legislative Agenda this fall.

There are further actions being taken on behalf of USO.. Seems Nevada, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho are on the hit list and reportedly legal actions are pending. All based on Interstate Commerce violations.

DanR, are you hearing any numbers ($) as far as non-resident price increases ?
As a potential NR hunter, I do think AZ should raise NR elk and deer tag prices, and require all the money up front, but I hope they don't get carried away. $500 for deer and $800 for elk sounds reasonable to me, but some people are suggesting three grand+ for a NR elk tag !
I would also like to see them charge more for the really popular unit/hunts, and less for the so-so units, like New Mexico does.

A-con.. there will be no hikes in non-res prices for at least another year. The price range that AZGF is allowed to charge for tags and licenses is set by the state legislature. The current non-res tag fees are at the top of the allowable price range. It will literally take an act of the state legislature to increase the top of that range. Considering the public comment periods and other time periods prescribed by law before any adjustments can be made, it will be at least 13 months before the range can be changed and thus the earliest price hikes will effect hunting will be the 2006 season. Even then, it was largely agreed that raising out of state fees is not the way to solve our problem. That will simply result in all states raising non-res fees and everyone who works for a living would be priced out of the market..

Dan, "One of the biggest helps that AZ hunters can provide is to contact thier state legislators and express support for the AZGF Legislative Agenda this fall."

What a novel idea! How about finding out your legislator's voting records on AZGF bills in the past and getting rid of the ones who aren't AZFG supporters. How many hunters do you know who have ever actually contacted a legislator? Good luck! Maybe this will get a few hunters to get off their ass and get politically active so me, Buzz and Gunner won't have to do all the work!

Right! i bet i talk to more legislators, congressman than all 3 of you guys combined, and you know what i`m calling them about!

cjcj, Sorry! I should have included you with us. I think Mars, 1 pointer, Nemont, dgibson, nut, CO Oak and a few others here have probably contacted legislators, too. But I bet that , overall, less than 5% of the hunters who bitch about everything have ever contacted any representative about anything. Most of the ones I ask don't even know who their representatives are.

Well your probably right about that [last post] I was just a little "miffed" when i read your other post[all of the work], and i do thank you for including some of the rest of us, but yes i have to agree that there are a significant amount of people who bitch, and complain and never even call, write, or e`mail their elected officials, and that is sad. because it only takes less than a couple of minutes to contact them, just think if 25% of the public would call the white house/congress etc. once every 6 months! just twice a year! I pride myself in calling at least 5 times a week [i have even been told by our governors office that i`m "harrassing" them] I told them to come and try to arrest me for it! But yes i really do believe that we as americans are to "apathetic" and we think that nothing will get done, but i do think it has an impact when you contact your reps.[legislators] and if your in AZ and you don`t know who your [district rep.] is tell me where you live and i will give you their name and contact info. anyways thanks for your reply Ithaca.

Ithica, Sometimes I wonder about you.. Everyone never does anything and generalities are not for thinking people.. Why do you insist on lumping hunters in a comingled pool? You have no idea about who talks to whom or how frequently. All you seem to do is make observations and derisive statements. I've noticed a significant amout of noise from those few who seem to assume upon themselves the responsibility for saving the planet, or at least that portion of it that they are conerned with. Did you ever stop to think that there could be lots of people who contact legislators, who just don't feel the need to discuss it with you?? Get off of your high horse cowboy.. You're just another asshole with the rest of us.. You are not lined with gold.... So stop presuming that you are the only one who ever does anything about anything. Seems those are the only original thoughts that you seems to have...

There are 3-4 of us at my work that are on the phone a min. of once or twice a week to our Assemblymen, State Legislature, or even our esteemed Gov-en-ator  about items ranging from sportman's issues, animal rights crap, ammo taxes, lack of representation from the "North State", etc. We tend to hit them 1-2-3 on the same day (so our opinions don't get lost in the mirad of other chit) and follow each conversation up with an email.

It doesn't take long to do this, sometimes you actually get to carry on a semi-intelligent conversation with someone you actually voted for, and I think bitchin' without doing anything about it is like shovelin' sand against the tide...you aren't gonna get anywhere!

...being from Kaliphoney, there is ALWAYS plenty to bitch about :(
