Im from wisconsin and my girlfriend and i would like to bowhunt for elk in the beartooth wilderness.Going out to scout the area for a week or so the second week in sep.Of course all nonresidents have to send in for the draw.just wondering if anyone has hunted or knows anything about the area. Thanks in advance for any info.Paul.

I'd look hard for somewhere else. Really low numbers in the the beartooth, and an early rifle season that would mess with your bowhunt.

*edit to add- never hunted there myself, just what I've gathered from hearing about and researching the area.

Depends on where you are talking about. The A/B Wilderness area is almost 1 million acres. There is one unit that opens Sept. 15 for rifle season..big horseback country, be sure to buy yourself a wolf tag before you head in there.

There are some areas that can be really good that aren't open to rifle in Sept. I have hunted it and it used to be an annual pack trip for the early rifle season for my dad.

Im thinking of spending like three weeks pounding the mountains.Love to get a wolf tag.We have to many here in wisconsin also. There should be some guys back in there early rifle hunting when im out there. Will have to check a lot of country. Thanks for the info.

If your thinking of 316 you may want to have a conversation with the biologist for that region. Great country, way back in, lot's of griz and wolves. Pretty substancial predation affect on the ungulates over the last 5 yrs. Take a good look at the stats. Fairly easy draw for a non res., however, last year I looked real hard at the area and was convinced there are better opportunites and went elsewhere. Good luck.

Definitely take a camera if you go though. Gorgeous country and scenery that'll help make the trip a success, regardless of elk numbers.

Cant Wait
