Banquet honors work for wild sheep
By MARK WARD for the Missoulian
The Montana Chapter Foundation for North American Wild Sheep rotates its annual banquet to a different city in Montana every year and hasn't been to Missoula in a number of years.
This year, the 14th annual FNAWS banquet and show is back, scheduled to be in the Garden City on March 3-4.
This nonprofit organization raises a lot of money at these banquets and members come from all over to support the group's efforts on behalf of wild sheep, particularly the bighorns that call our mountains home.
“We are happy to be the host city once again this year in Missoula,” said spokesman Jim Weatherly.
The annual banquet is held Saturday night, but starting Friday afternoon, there will be a large ram display, artwork and booths that will be open to the public at the Holiday Inn-Parkside.
The hours of the free public seminars and ram displays will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 3, and then again Saturday, March 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“The last time FNAWS came to Missoula, we had good crowds both days at the free events,” added Weatherly, “With the lineup we have for this year, we are expecting much of the same.”
FNAWS members come from all over the state to attend the banquet on Saturday night. “That is where a lot of funds are raised through auctions and raffles that we hold the night of the banquet,” said Weatherly.
This year, auction items featured will be an Alaska Dall sheep hunt, an Alberta archery moose hunt and an Alberta rifle moose hunt. On the auction block as well will be a British Columbia wolf hunt, Alberta black bear hunt, Snake River chukar hunt and fishing trip, Alaska salmon fishing trip and an Alberta walleye/northern pike fishing trip along with bronzes and artwork.
FNAWS will also raffle off an Alaska Dall sheep hunt and a great selection of rifles.
Tickets for the banquet March 4 will be $30 per person for adults and $25 for ages 17 and under. Call Jim Weatherly at 549-5697 or Tom Powers at 777-3518 for tickets and more information.
