Caribou Gear Tarp

montana DIY for 2010

2 and 4 have grizzlies too. For the most part, the breaks are the only area you can completely avoid them.

Since no one's represented Region 2 yet,

For the most part, Region 2 is half like region 1, and half like region 3, terrain wise.
Wolves, lions and bad management have the numbers pretty low in quite a bit of it though.

Some awesome country though for sure.

I did some on the spot scouting around Missoulla when I was helping my brother out during the rifle deer/elk season. Saw lots of game, mostly in the backs of trucks, as we were still learning the area. I'm planning on being back in that area next year with a tag this time though if anyone has any info on DIY hunts in that area.

Region 2 gets a lot of hunting pressure.

I grew up hunting the Missoula area, have hunted region 2 the last 29 years. If you know the country, where to be with the right conditions (weather, pressure, etc.) you can kill elk pretty consistantly, but its not easy.

There arent many secret spots anymore and persistance has always been the key for my elk hunting success in region 2. Be prepared to not see elk everyday and hunt from daylight to dark. If I were to hunt MT for trophy sized elk, I likely wouldnt concentrate too much on region 2, although in the past West of Missoula has produced the best bulls, IMO.

A few region 2 bulls:

One Dad shot a few years back:

One I shot in about 1986:

A friends bull from the late 80's, West of Missoula. The same guy has killed 2 other bulls West of town that scored 340 and 350:

Ruling out Region 3 is a bad idea.........there are many guys who can consistently kill 300+bulls every single year in Region 3.
After hunting the breaks for about 10 years now, I would say, you should bring a good pair of hiking boots before worrying about brining a call:) I killed a 320 class archery bull in the breaks this year but got fortunate. Snuck up and shot him in his bed. I saw 4 times as many people as i did elk EASILY! And to put that in perspective, I shot my elk 6 miles from my truck so there really is no place to get entirely away from the people. Many of the elk killed out there, are actually pushed from other hunters.

I think you should go to region three and dance with the grizzlies for a while:):) Getting charged by a big griz will always get the blood pumping:)LOL

With all this talk of grizzlies and packs of wolves in Montana, I was just wondering if you are allowed to carry a sidearm during an archery hunt.
