I dont understand the benefit, or case for that?

Since they are an invasive unregulated species they can currently be hunted without a license, season or limit. If listed as an upland bird I would assume they would then be treated like the rest of our upland birds and hunting would be regulated.

In my opinion hunting of them does not need to be regulated. Maybe Montana sees a new source of revenue from quail hunters. mtmuley

Yep. Mine too. And I may be loosely tied to how they got here. In 1984 after high school I worked for a pretty good sized ranch here in the Root. Part of what we did is raise quail and turn them loose for the owners wealthy buds to hunt them. Among other hunting things. mtmuley

I wonder if part of the push for regulation is to keep people from being on the landscape bothering the other birds that are regulated. Can’t shoot xyz today so I’ll go run the dogs anyways

That could be part of the reason, but in the root I don’t think they get hunted in a majority of their range. Most are on private and landowners really like having them as “pets”.

I agree to some extent in Montana you rarely see trophy shots with a posse behind them. Keeping opportunity as long as we can is a good thing. MTFWP has taken things too far but if done correctly can provide a ton of opportunity. I can see benefits to both.
