very beginning phases of planning for a elk/deer trip for next year. so my first stop was the Montana hunt planner. If I were to be looking at say the south east corner is that a restricted area or could I hunt there with the general tag? I see there is a an elk portions tab on the map and I'm assuming that elk territory?? What could I expect from a typical weather year in say late October? any help and recommendations would be of help.

Thanks

Cliff

For elk it depends if you are talking 704 or 705. They are both antlerless only on a general tag, I believe. I think a general tag is not valid on national forest lands while it is valid on national forest in 705. I'm not familiar with that part of the state but I don't think the elk herd is very large there. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

General elk is only valid for cows outside the Custer in 704 and 705. Deer is general in both and is a fun hunt. I would not count on finding elk on public outside the NF.
